It is what it says, for the absolute beginner. A good read.

This book might rate a 5 star, but I only read it (except for the last couple chapters) and have not tried it on the computer yet. I had planned to start this week after life wasn't interfering. To explain what my past was in programming, to give you an idea of my experience, I started with a very expensive video course for Visual Basic 6. I had fun making the GUI on my computer, but that was about it. When I first got the course, it said, "we assume you have had some experience programming". Well, I called the company and they said try it for a month and if you don't like it send it back. Well, I didn't send it back, but did sell it on line for a loss. Then I bought the book by John Smiley on VB 6 and tried to learn something there. A lot of people didn't like that book because it was written like a novel based on an actual classroom discussion. You had to read a lot of unnecessary stuff before you got to some meat. Well, I gave up programming for awhile but one day at a used book sale in a library found 'Programming for Dummies' based on Liberty Basic. I was a little familiar with it having downloaded both it and Just Basic. I really was not learning much so started looking again on Amazon and found this book for beginners based on Just Basic. Now that I have bored you, I'll get to the book. Although it is an inch thick, a lot of the book is pictures of the GUI and you will go through it rather fast. I think it does a good job of explaining a lot of what you are doing and why. There are things that I wish all books like this would include though, such as things to watch out for when you program. For example when you print something on the screen you have to put it in these things, "your name here". There are a lot of little things like that to remember and it would be good to have a page or reminder showing all that stuff. There are a few things I wish authors of books that are instructual would do, like offer the book in spiral bounding. When you are trying to fight a book to keep it on page 28 when it wants to go to page 1, it is a drag. Next, I wish these types of books would be given to people that have no idea about programming and have them do the book and see how much they actually learned. You are not going to be able to program the rotation of the planets with this book, (now watch someone will do it after only reading this book) but you will get a good start. A little tip, be careful of books that say something like VB for beginners or Python for beginners, because the author may have been thinking that you have been programming in FORTRAN for the lat 20 years and now are trying to learn Perl or some such. This book assumes that you are what it says, an absolute beginner. I would say it is a good place to start. I hope this helps in your decision.

Luciano Ramalho was a Web developer before the Netscape IPO in 1995, and switched from Perl to Java to Python in 1998. Since then he worked on some of the largest news portals in Brazil using Python, and taught Python web development in the Brazilian media, banking and government sectors. His speaking credentials include PyCon US (2013), OSCON (2002, 2013), and 15 talks over the years at PythonBrasil (the Brazilian PyCon) and FISL (the largest FLOSS conference in the Southern Hemisphere). An excellent text covering very advanced Python features.

Among the books that are currently populating my Goodread's wishlist are no less than 20 titles dedicated to the Python language. They range from Django up to pandas, passing through Twisted and Test-Driver Development. Time is limited, so they often end up waiting in queue for months. But when I've seen Fluent Python on that shelf I had to make it mine immediately and put it in front of that queue. Getting through this book took me several months, not only because we are talking about some 700 hundreds good pages, but mostly due to the fact that it covers advanced topics that most of the Pythonists currently living on planet Earth never heard of in their life. Fluent Python is one of those books that you must taste little by little or you get devoured by those fierce topics and examples.

Released late this summer, Fluent Python is the latest work of Ramalho, a name that should sound familiar to those that have been already diving deeply into, allow me the term, Python's high-end features, powerful things, such as coroutines, that most developers never heard of in their life. Those that did probably hope never being tested on them during a job interview. And that's pretty much what the book is all about. Neither style nor the the basics of the language, but very advanced features. Quite a rare book indeed, since almost all of the Python books available introduce the readers to the language and don't get past Object Oriented Programming.

An excellent text overall, no doubts. Not for the faint of heart. Still, I am a bit puzzled by the fact that some chapters look extremely simple, others cover quirks and intricacies that you can probably live without, unless you dare touching the very core of the language ,and that get you to reach the end of a chapter with that what the hell expression on your face. The chapter covering abstract classes is an example of the former. Don't get me wrong, it's interesting and the examples well laid out. Still, it looks a basic concept that doesn't fit this kind of book.

A couple of words on the examples: they are throughout the whole book well done. The author often presents the same concepts in different flavors or does work on the same example and improves it as concepts are taken into the discussion. The code is intense but easy to follow. Key lines are extensively explained later on, so that the reader won't miss that specific features that makes it all possible. There are so many gems that you will probably end up writing most of that code down to make it yours. This is actually the best thing the reader can do. Try it, modify it, assimilate it, master it.

Among the many topics covered there are two that are worth mentioning: the first is chapter four, which covers strings, Unicode and bytes. Marvelous, simply marvelous. The examples, the explanations. So clear and to the point. You definitely get away from it with a deep understanding of how strings work in Python 2.7 and 3. The second is that dedicated to futures. Actually it's the whole topic, which spans several chapters at the very end of the book. The authors shows how working with threads and subprocesses improve the efficiency of an application, and how easy it is to exploit them through the futures that are now available in the language. He does gives us a very interesting example in many different flavors, showing us how the code and performance change. Great.

Decorators and closures are also well described, even if not as good as the aforementioned topics. In that sense, the author does complement what we find about the subject in Effective Python: 59 Specific Ways to Write Better Python, another must have for any serious Pythonist.

Overall, a great Python book. A must have for any Python developer interested in getting the most out of the language.

Beautiful Python

Luciano's Python style is beautiful. I've been programming in Python for 15 years, and am learning something from every page. Sometimes those things are language features, but more often it's just a more elegant, expressive way of writing Python. This is a book that can make a good programmer better.

Must Read!

Great book for those interested in modern, idiomatic, Python development. I've seen some of the author's lectures in Brazil and the book does an amazing job on bring its practical, straightforward and clear approach to a whole new audience.

Although it's not a book for beginners, I've been amazingly successful using it and the Python Cookbook to present Python to Java and C# developers.

Easy to Navigate!

Fifteen Thousand Useful Phrases by Grenville Kleiser is a book in the public domain and there are several versions available on Amazon as Kindle editions. I actually got samples of all of them before I made my choice. Some cost under a dollar, but the only way to find anything was to endlessly push "Next Page" on my Kindle until I arrived at the section I wanted. This edition cost a little more than the others, but it was the ONLY one that was formatted so I could navigate to the chapter I wanted and even to the first letter of the phrase - Thank you!

I have always been a prolific reader and a lover of the English language. I use to read dictionaries as a child - family and friends thought I was more than a little strange! If you love language like I do, if you recognize the beauty in a well-turned phrase, if you appreciate how precisely chosen words and phrases can evoke new ideas and new trains of thought, AND if you want an edition of Fifteen Thousand Useful Phrases that is actually usable - Get This Book!

Hits All Around the Mark Like a Drunken Carpenter

Kleiser's venerable Fifteen Thousand Useful Phrases: A Practical Handbook Of Pertinent Expressionshas been around since 1917 and is now accessible online through the Project Gutenberg as a freely downloadable e-book. This is the paperback form of it, and for those of you who prefer to hold your books, it is worth having.

THE GOOD

If this book were free (as the electronic version is) it would receive five stars. Who could complain about phrases like "Hits All Around the Mark Like a Drunken Carpenter"? This expression hits the center of the bulls-eye--an unforgettable phrase that eloquently conveys the writer's thoughts.

THE BAD
--------------------
However, in other places it is far off the mark today. What about "damask cheek"? This is Shakespearean English that I suspect most people nowadays would have great trouble understanding (the Project Gutenberg e-book transcriber provided a mistaken gloss for it). I cannot fault Kleiser for his erudition, but for those of us in the 21st century, explanations, and perhaps alternatives, would be greatly appreciated!

The book gets four stars for the incredible work that Kleiser produced, but loses one because publishers keep churning out copies of this book without providing added value. I don't recommend Amazon Kindle to anybody

Based on my previous experience on ebooks from other companies, I placed this order. Unfortunately, Amazon Kindle has so basic technology on ebooks. It is so hard to work with this book. Many times the book stops working and you need to restart that. Search is very hard and cheap technology. I don't recommend Amazon Kindle to anybody. Try to buy from other sellers!

This book overs implied some steps in the projects, it looks easy to follow initially, but actually not. Because the over simplification, you need to go back and review a lot. And some of the steps like rename an object are even impossible to locate, make you rather confuse where you are now.

Aristotle would highly recommend this book!

When I was given a review copy of this wonderful book, guide and manual for How to Make Powerful Speeches, I thought I might be reading yet another 'How To' about speaking that really told me nothing very new -- or that I couldn't have mined from my own experience as a speaker and author. How wrong I was!

In a series of steps of startling clarity (signalled by black and white chapter divisions), Eamonn O'Brien takes the reader on a journey into the very heart of making, researching, delivering and capitalizing on powerful speeches. His approach is almost forensic. He looks in close detail at every aspect of speech giving, from the use of ancient rhetorical learning to audience relevance, content development, humour, Powerpoint and video, body language and gestures, handling questions, tone and accent, time management, appearance and how to be introduced.

Everything a public speaker or business presenter could possibly need is here in clear, intellectually snappy and memorable sections. It helps that Eamonn is also gifted with a rich sense of humour and a pleasing tone to enliven what could otherwise be simply an instructional manual. The book is very far from that. It is informed by anecdotes and stories, and a lively sympathy for the many of us (all of us?) who have been gripped by fear of public speaking.

Although the approach is forensic, the delivery is rich in emotion, good sense and good fun. Reading it is like talking to a very well informed confidante. You want to learn the author's secrets and be inspired. In other words, Eamonn's book is a like a persuasive speech in itself, delivering the three essential elements of great rhetoric: Logos (Logic), Pathos (Emotion) and Ethos (Character). Aristotle would be proud of him.

Why the Irish still rule when it comes to Powerful Public Speeches!

The Irish are known as great storytellers and spinners of yarns, which I learned is not necessarily true when I moved here - there are many as scared of public speaking as you! And it's part of the reason that Eamonn, a proud, professional speaking Irish man, brought his wealth of speaking experience together in this book. He runs his training business The Reluctant Speakers Club in Dublin and he regularly encourages wannabe speakers, in all sorts of industries and at different speaking levels, to take that leap to make the powerful speeches they need to share their knowledge with the world, as the expert in their field.

Eamonn, known as our Podcasting Presenter King, has also been our amazing President of the Professional Speaking Association Ireland Branch for 2014-15 and has been an inspirational leader of our network sharing all the massively valuable and easily useable presenting tips with us over the year that he shares with you in his book now.

His no-nonsense but encouraging, and lyrical Irish story-telling, practical approach in the book enable you to easily learn how you can step up and overcome any public speaking worries and fears - "how do I plan it, how do I write it, how do I present it with flair on stage?" - and gives you straightforward step-by-step advice on what you CAN do instead. He makes presenting live on stage, at a meeting, an interview or simply telling a story at an event, seem so much simpler than you ever thought before.

He gave me this copy to write the review - but we'd all bought one already as soon as he launched it in Dublin - so thanks for giving us your gift Eamonn and for helping reluctant speakers be a thing of the past and helping Irish (and other!) speakers continue to rule!

Very few people like giving speeches or public speaking and this book promises to help you overcome this perceived issue. Like a good presentation, this book starts to grow on you, changing from initial polite uncertainty to something that you were glad that you stayed to listen to.

The author offers up what can be a good total solution, showing you how to get up on stage, form a connection with your audience and make your presentations shine. Presentation advice and strategies are also offered up, carefully being something for everyone. Unlike many “how to”-type books, this is something that manages to also be of interest to the more accomplished speaker. Very few public speakers can, if they are honest, really say that they never need to learn anything else. It only takes one new tip or wrinkle to make your presentation shine even brighter!

When this reviewer saw the price of the book he had to double check - was there a digit missing. For what you get, for less than the price of a McDonald’s meal, this could be one of the year’s best bargains. If you let it, the book can also shine light on other areas of business too; the astute reader can easily hoover up knowledge and other good-to-know information in the background as they read.

This reviewer perhaps cannot understand the fear many have with speaking: the bigger problem here can be shutting up and keeping to the timetable (yes, this reviewer picked up a few tips to retrain that particular bad habit). For many, more people fear standing up on a stage and giving a speech than they do death. Because of this fear, many people who could benefit from giving a speech or a presentation are losing out on lost opportunities, advancement and, well enjoying themselves.

It is strange, as even a lot of the information in the book that you may argue is less relevant, such as historical references, curiously finds its point and just feels a natural part of the entire package. The author is quick to pour cold water on some “instant solutions” to overcome the fear of public speaking, such as imagining your audience is naked. Quite why someone thought that this would work one doesn’t know, yet it is repeated so often it almost has a Biblical relevance for many.

To wrap up, the author makes a great presentation, in writing. Engaging, humorous, impactful and focussed, the book has something for everyone with a lot of great takeaway points. A highly recommended read!

Great series for first graders

Wonderful book in a really nice series for young girls. My first grader was able to independently read this with ease, and she was engaged by it fully from cover to cover. I will be buying her more Heidi Heckelbeck books soon!

I HAD to start out this review with a gem from the calendar. All of the expressions are translated both literally and figuratively. As a French professor, I love to post these phrases everywhere and use them as notes to give my advisees. I loved the 2015 edition, and am sure to get a big kick out of the 2016 calendar. It reflects current French language, but is spiced with literary gems and historic references. A must have for all Francophiles!
