About the Author
Jake Wizner teaches eighth grade English and social studies at the Salk School of Science in New York City.  He is the author of the young adult novels Spanking Shakespeare (Random House, 2007) and Castration Celebration (Random House, 2009) and has spent the past two decades developing and inspiring young writers.

A Book for Both Teachers and Writers

Everyone writing their own memoir or teaching memoir needs to read this book. Author Wizner has been teaching memoir, to eighth graders, even struggling students, for over 20 years. The results will astound you, and he always begins his unit with a writing model. He allows for even graphic memoirs, and you can read one in the book. The prompts will work for any age level to get you thinking and remembering, and best of all writing. A novelist himself, Wizner addresses beginnings, endings, and titles, fact and truth, understory, and much more. Writers and teachers, have this book available to you!

Not Worth Writing About

Worth Writing About is full of information and useful tips. I have no doubt that many teachers will find it a valuable resource. However, although I have been teaching for 20 years across different ages, subjects, and continents, I would have preferred something more practical. The book provides a rationale for teaching memoir with adolescents, as well as numerous examples of both student and professional work. Every possible objection or block to successful writing is addressed. There are writing prompts and tips for getting students started. What is lacking is an outline of content, a syllabus, a timeline, lesson plans, or any other hint of how to implement the knowledge that the author shares or create a functional framework in which to organize it. It is like having a cookbook that describes a rationale for culinary arts, shares information on the necessary ingredients and techniques for cooking, but has no recipes. The reason I rated the book as high as I did is that the information is excellent. The reason I rated it as low as I did is that this book will not teach anyone how to explore memoir with students.
