About the Author
Kristine K. Kershul blends her experience as a teacher, world traveler and language scholar to create a playful, innovative way to learn and use a new language.

Teacher: As an expert linguist, Kristine spent ten years teaching German at universities in the United States and in Europe.

World Traveler: An adventurous spirit, Kristine has explored more than 100 countries, from Bhutan to Zimbabwe, and almost every exotic locale in between. She understands the problems that all travelers encounter, regardless of which country they are visiting. She knows first-hand how languages can open doors to new adventures, new friends and different cultures.

Language Scholar: Kristine completed her undergraduate and graduate studies while living in Heidelberg, Germany. She then received a second Master's Degree from the University of California in Santa Barbara and subsequently, did her Doctoral studies in Medieval German Languages and Literature. In addition to German, she also speaks a number of other languages ranging from Arabic to Swahili.

A Best Buy for Arabic Students

First, a word of warning. Although basic Arabic words are not as difficult as they may appear, and the alphabet is actually easy (really !), Arabic grammar is infinitely more complex than that of any Romance language or even German. Young people have a natural affinity for learning new languages, but older people will find it takes far more than a mere "10 minutes a day" to make any progress at all.

A second warning is that there is a greater variance in Arabic dialects than can be found in English. Not only does the pronunciation vary, but the words are different as well. A case in point is that I walked into my local Lebanese eatery and, while waiting for the food, requested of my waitress, "I want pepper," which this book teaches as, "Oreedo felful."

The Lebanese waitress (who spoke only some English) had never heard the word *oreedo* before, and she brought me a plate of Jalapeño peppers. I asked the same of the Egyptian waitress, and she too had never heard of *oreedo,* and her word for pepper was *flay-flay.* After a discussion with the entire staff, they told me that the word for a cellar of ground, black pepper was *b'har.* (This is incorrect, and the proper word for black pepper is *felful aswed.*)

As for "I want," by following a mother garbed in traditional Muslim dress around a supermarket, I observed her toddlers yanking at her dress, pointing at brightly-colored sweets (deliberately placed on lower shelves) and screaming "Badi! B'diiiii!" That is how I learned the Levantine word for "I want," but *badi* does not appear in this book. *Fil Maatam* (at the restaurant) I often hear patrons ask, "Wain al hammam?" ("Where is the restroom?") But this book gives the word *eyena* for "Where?" and recommends asking for *al meerHaaD* when "in a restaurant or public facility."

Absolutely no one, Lebanese or Egyptian, at the restaurant (where I enjoy the daily lunch special) understood a phrase from the book, *Meta na koo loo* -- "When do we eat" (I was growing impatient), but the book fails to provide a common word, *Yellah!* ("Hurry up!") which is understood by all. I suppose that the book tries to keep things polite, because another common phrase conspicuously absent is *Shu baddak?* ("What do you want?")

One day, in frustration, I took this book to the restaurant and asked the girls why they were unfamiliar with so many words I had learned from the lessons, and they consulted with each other, then announced dismissively, "That's ARABIC Arabic!"

Similarly, a casual greeting given in the book is *Marhaba,* and that's generally understood among Lebanese, Palestinians and Egyptians, but an Iraqi I know (who, incidentally, was once confined to the infamous Abu Ghraib prison, although he's the most honest person I've ever met -- I met him when my friend left his wallet in the Iraqi's *ah-taaksee*) informs me that in Iraq, nobody says *marhaba,* they say *shlonik.*

So it is that if you embark on a study of Arabic using this book, you will be learning a language that is spoken in no land and among no people, except for perhaps academics. As well think of learning Latin.

But this problem is just as true of every other Arabic study book I've seen and also the Rosetta Stone Arabic Level 1 software at ten-times the price! So If your mind is still set on learning Arabic, this is not only the best book I've seen, but also the easiest and among the least expensive.

It contains an adequate set of flashcards, a lot of small stickers that you can paste around the house (although they have a remarkably non-aggressive glue which allows them to fall off soon) to identify Arabic words for everyday objects, and an adequate CD-ROM (which you install on your computer). It runs on Flash®.

The CD-ROM is not great. It's superb for learning the cardinal numbers 1 to 10, but not as good for higher numbers. (Again, the Lebanese use different names for numbers 11 through 15.); it's excellent for learning the names of colors (although the native speaker who pronounces these names is cut off at the beginning of "brown"; thus, when she reads *boonee,* it is heard as "oonyee."

There are only two other animated lessons on the CD-ROM -- (1.) a very long lesson of verbs, pronouns, conversational phrases and opposites, and (2.) the names of objects, and these are presented 23 at a time. That's far too many to learn at once, and so this part of the program is less useful, by which I mean more difficult.

Despite all this, if you have frequent interaction with those of the Arab persuasion, I encourage you to buy this book. (If you purchase it used, first inquire if the stickers and CD-ROM are still part of the package.) If you studied a foreign language in school and hated it, be assured that this is more fun, because you can put it to immediate use. When you pull into a gas station, it's a hoot to walk up to the window, and when the clerk asks you the number of your pump, you can loudly proclaim, *Arrrb'-a*!

Wonderful with good resources!

I really like the way this book immerses the reader into Arabic. Kershu slips in Arabic words in the midst of English explanations, so before you realize it, you're learning another Arabic word. Also this book teaches the script along with the transliteration; a necessary tool for mastery. You are taught useful and important words, questions, phrases first--very good for those not just interested in getting by for a Middle Eastern visit. The audio is also very quite good. Highly recommend.

Bought This as a Gift

I bought this as a gift for my husband who wants to learn Arabic. He's been also learning from native speakers. He said the writing/script was off from the pronunciation given in the book. (He knows how to read Arabic already). He showed me too (I can read Arabic as well). He said "How do you pronounce this?" (the Arabic script). I told him and he said "Right. Now look at how they want you to pronounce it." and it was incorrect. It was like that with most of the teaching in the book.

He found that very annoying and has stopped using this book. Right now he's using an online site which he likes much better, until we find him a book that has proper pronunciation. He did use the stickers to place around the household items, though.

The Kindle product is not usable in a law class setting, where it is most likely to be used. If I had been aware of the 7-day return policy, I would have been sure to return it within the week. The text itself is ok, but the kindle version does not have any referenes to actual page numbers that a professor is likely to use when referring to the case book.

Save yourself the trouble and purchase the text book, NOT the Kindle e-book.

Great ESV Teaching and Preaching Bible

This reason I chose this particular Bible as when teaching or preaching it's important to be able to detect a specific verse quickly. It helps to have this layout when studying as well. The layout of verse by verse solves this issue as all prior ESV Bibles, I have seen, were not laid out this way. This Bible adds some weight and size vs those not having this feature plus referencing, but is not heavier or larger beyond easy use. Good easy to read type size as well.

Great Bible - Not so great construction

I love the format of this Bible. Pages are an ideal thickness, with plenty of note-taking room. However, 8 months after receiving it, the binding is already tearing away from the spine. This Bible has been we'll taken care of, so I can only assume the craftsmanship is substandard. Very disappointing considering its cost.

What an amazing study this is. I was fortunate enough to be part of a group that did this study as a trial before it went to publishing and it is truly one of the best studies I have done. It covers so much information in such an organized way that does not make you feel overwhelmed. Life Changing Study

LOVED this study! We did this study with a group of ladies from school - all of us from different denominations and different churches. It was AWESOME. I think all of us would say that we grew leaps and bounds in our faith and knowledge of God. This is a wonderful study to do alone or in a group - it spurs great discussion. I would recommend this to anyone wanting to dig a little deeper in their relationship with our great God!

About the Author

Graham Sellers, AMD Software Architect and Engineering Fellow, represents AMD at the OpenGL ARB. He has contributed to the core OpenGL specification and extensions, and holds several graphics and image processing patents.

 

Richard S. Wright, Jr., Senior Software Engineer for Software Bisque, developed multimedia astronomy and planetarium software using OpenGL. For more than a decade he taught OpenGL programming in Full Sail University’s game development degree program.

 

Nicholas Haemel, Director of Camera Software at NVIDIA, has represented NVIDIA at the Khronos Group standards body and authored many OpenGL extensions.

An Essential Book for Learning OpenGL, But ...

First, let me say that the reorganization of text and code embodied in the Sixth Edition of the OpenGL Superbible was a good move. Oh, I have a few gripes and grumbles relating to the reorganization (e.g., it seems like Chapter 5 will never end. It could be split, deferring pieces to later and appropriate contexts.) The reorganization of the sample code is a good step forward. There is less dependence on mysterious libraries. And, the essential support code has been reorganized into a more attractive “framework.”
Be prepared for a lot of emphasis on shader programming. Face up to it: It’s the nature of the modern beast. If you’re not ready for that, one suggestion is to start with an earlier edition – one that focuses on earlier versions of OpenGL, and then grow to love it.
Having gone through many (aborigines are said to have a ternary number system: 1, 2, many) editions of the Superbible, I find it necessary to keep a copy of a corresponding Redbook (OpenGL Programming Guide) edition handy. In that sense, I find the Superbible to be an essential learning aid. But …

It was indeed unfortunate to find that the current authors and publisher continued to follow the habits of previous authors and publishers of walking away from what I view as their responsibility to their readership:

1. Others have complained about the quality of the black and white illustrations. They were correct: the printing of screenshots is terrible. The majority of the current authors are experienced authors. (a) They should have avoided the problem. (b) The editor should have caught the problem before going to press. (c) The printer should have called attention to the problem before committing to a run.

2. There is no consistent way of tying a screenshot or a code listing to a project name in the source code provided as a download on the book’s web site. I made it a point to deduce, by one means or another, the project name from the text or code if the project name was not explicitly mentioned (which was the usual case). The authors could have provided an index in the download’s README file.

3. In the Preface, an author states, “We made a bunch of mistakes – we’re certain of it. … If you think you see something that doesn’t quite gel, check the book’s Web site for errata.” I’m writing this review in June 2014, almost a year after publication of the book. There are no errata on the web site. Moreover, there is no mechanism for submitting errata.

4. The code I downloaded (dated November 2013) built on Visual Studio 2010 successfully. All but a few projects executed without error. I found the distribution for VS 2010 available on GitHub to be useless: Apparently the last person to build it built it with VS 2013. I considered submitting an issue, but got discouraged when I saw that the last commits were made seven or eight months ago.

5. The book’s Appendix C describes two tools, ktxtool and dds2ktx, which it says is available in the source code. Not so.

6. I searched for but could not find an OpenGL Superbible forum. The best I could find was the general OpenGL forum. The last blog entry on the book’s web site is dated February 2014. Apparently the authors have better things to do.

In scoring a rating for this edition of the OpenGL Superbible, I started with five stars. After all, I consider it and the Redbook to be essential components to learning OpenGL. Then, because of the lousy illustrations and the authors’ neglect, I backed off two stars. A one-star deduction would not have been enough.

It occurs to me that all of the problems enumerated above could be resolved on the book’s web site. I would be glad to improve my rating if the authors (or even someone else) would step up to addressing them.

Excellent Introduction to OpenGL, No Apple Support (for good reason)

I own every edition of this excellent book. One significant change in this edition that readers should be aware of is the complete abandonment of OpenGL on Apple's platform. From the preface of the book: "Gone is official support for the Apple Mac platform. Almost all of the new content in this edition requires features introduced with OpenGL 4.4 or 4.5, or recent OpenGL extensions -- none of which were supported by OS X at the time of writing. There is no expectation that Apple will further invest in its OpenGL implementation, so we encourage our readers to move away from the platform."

To be fair, the current state of OpenGL on the Mac is poor. Mavericks supports OpenGL 4.1, which is now 5 years old (2010). Apple has announced that the future of graphics development on Apple devices will be "Metal", which is an Apple-proprietary low level hardware interface. This is an unfortunate development for those wanting to target multiple platforms, which is a primary motivation for using OpenGL.

If you want to develop for the Mac, you should pick up a previous edition of this excellent book, probably 6th or even 5th edition.

For Beginners

The main issue I have with this book is the dependency to the sb6 library which is the author's wrapper library around OpenGL.

If the book were titled the SB6 Library superbible, It would have been ok but after reading the claims at the beginning of the book stating that this book is meant to go over the OpenGL library without jumping back and fourth I couldn't help but wonder why the authors chose to include their own library which defeats that purpose to some extent.

Granted the library simplifies things but that's not the purpose of a book. Since the target audience is already familiar with C++, there's no need to wrap the main() function for example, which I find unnecessary. This may be fine for the author but we all have different styles of coding and it's not the author's place to force a framework in order to explain how the OpenGL pipeline works.

This is a book about OpenGL and the code should run out of the box with dependencies to OpenGL, GLUT and GLFW being acceptable. If the authors chose to develop a wrapper library, the library should be part of the text as an illustration to how things are put together. Also what would be more acceptable is if the sb6 library's cpp source code was available to view instead of distributing a black box which may confuse the reader.

Also when adding shader code, the authors fail to mention the appropriate code updates to the rendering functions which can be a bit inconvenient. Also failure to delete compiled shaders in one of the examples shoud be avoided.

The OpenGL pipeline is getting more and more complex and I can see the appeal in simplifying it by making it more accessible but writing a book about a library and forcing a black box framework is unacceptable. This book does explain things well I must admit but for experienced C++ and OpenGL users, I recommend the Red Book for a more thorough read and detailed reference.

I have to say that this one is an extremely great guide book in dealing with one’s career or job hunting to be exact. Creating a resume is the first step when planning to do job hunting and this book helps a lot in it for it has a lot of tricks on how to make resume more stunning and as well as how to get through the interview portion. This is definitely a great help to everyone. Many things on this book are based on the author’s personal experiences which makes it to be even more interesting to read and sounds more attainable. Aiming high is never wrong and so have this book as a help. It’s highly recommended.

In this brief yet worthwhile book you will find valuable information about how to prepare your resume, how important is to do some research about the company you applied for and prepare for your interview. John Hughes teaches us that it is very important to describe the experience that we have to the employer that makes us a perfect fit for the job. We have to impress and to make ourselves memorable in order to succeed. I recommend this book to anyone who have trouble finding work.
