Stuart Jay Raj is an Australian polyglot who specializes in the languages and dialects spoken in South East Asia and China. His talents have allowed him to earn a professional living as a simultaneous interpreter in Thai, Mandarin, Cantonese, and Indonesian, among others, providing language and cultural training for multinational companies in the region and hosting his own TV programme on Thailand’s Channel 5. He holds a degree in Cognitive and Applied Linguistics from Griffith University and has become an expert in the field of language acquisition with a strong track record of success. Stuart’s background knowledge of Sanskrit, Khmer, Lao and various Chinese dialects and minority languages enables him to present a fascinating and unique perspective on the Thai language which makes everything fall logically into place.

This book is like a classroom lecture

This book is like a classroom lecture, which was refreshing. It's not like other Thai language books I've ordered; different, better in ways, but doesn't seem as well edited. This book feels like it could have been 50-100 pages shorter. That doesn't affect my 5-star rating. It's great for an Advanced Beginner (like myself) and I would consider it a good investment for almost any learner. $30 is a good price to get you some very valuable tips on learning Thai. It also got me to focus on learning Thai, which is worth a few dollars. I thought the organization was a little off, but, again, in the big scheme of things that means nothing. I'm not sure I would recommend this for someone with zero Thai knowledge; however, I would still say order the book and use with with another reference. The great thing about Stuart is he will get you to think linguistically, which was great. He can do things that my previous Thai teachers failed to grasp. Again, easily worth $30. For a backpacker, it's not the smallest book, and I might actually have to rip out about 50 pages when I travel instead of putting this book in my backpack. Nonetheless, it's so important to touch base on mouth position that anyone frustrated about speaking Thai needs to give this book a shot.

Not your average language learning textbook

This is not your old language learning textbook. It doesn't start with a dialogue where Jack introduces himself to Lek on his first visit to Thailand, or gradually progress through more and more complex exercises which introduce new vocabulary. There are plenty of such textbooks and there's nothing wrong with that approach, but this book is not one of them.

Stu Jay takes you on a journey to understand Thai language by introducing different concepts and explaining why they are the way they are. Be they Thai consonants, vowels, Thai culture or the history of the Thai alphabet. You are guaranteed to improve your understanding of how Thai works and why, and as a side effect you'll learn to use it better. It's a great companion volume to any standard Thai language textbook, a course at a language school or one-on-one tutoring with a Thai teacher. You'll learn things that you won't find elsewhere, and add new depth to your Thai regardless of whether you're an absolute beginner or a veteran of the language.

Must read!!

This book is an excellent introduction to R. I have been teaching computing courses in a biostatistics department such as an introductory computing course for SAS and R, and an advanced statistical computing course on simulation and numerical methods. Just as the book title indicates, it covers basic concepts of the R programming environment. Its step-by-step approach with short chapters will benefit anyone who is new to R, particularly readers with no prior programming experiences. Each chapter contains thought-provoking exercises, which will help readers fully understand the subject. Moreover, many readers will actually enjoy working on exercises. It also discusses useful programming tips such as styles of object names, avoiding certain object names like "T", and an illustration of debugging tools. The chapters end with a summary and a summary of functions, which demonstrate an excellent pedagogical skill of the author. As a biostatistician, I may wish to see more statistical and biostatistical examples and exercises, but for learning base R, I think the current treatment is as good as it gets to serve readers with a various backgrounds such as mathematics, science, engineering, social science, finance, and management, etc. I plan to use the materials of this book in the computing course that I am scheduled to teach. This is a kind of book that I wish I had read it when I was a student. I applaud the author for his excellent contribution.

Some may quibble that the animals are not drawn to scale (for instance, a dung beetle should not appear as large as a deer's tail), but the fun of seeing eight varieties of hummingbirds or being introduced to a yabby surely outweighs such petty complaints. All of the creatures are identified in the formidable pictorial "Did You Know?" section at the back. Fascinating Alphabet Book for All Ages

This is a truly wonderful book for children and adults to share or for children to peruse on their own. Each page has attractive watercolor pictures of several animals that begin with the same letter of the alphabet. The twist is that there is one animal that has eight pictures. This turns the typical alphabet book into an alphabet book cum counting book. It's trickier than it sounds, too. On the O page, there are eight otters, but some are river otters and some are sea otters. In other cases some of the eight animals are babies and others are adults. Sometimes there is one crawling on the big letter at the top of the page or somewhere else unexpected. Additionally, some of the animals are ones I had never heard of such as the upupa and quoll. The pictures of the animals are not labelled, but their names are listed at the bottom of the page. It's up to you to figure out which one is which. You are helped in this project by a 4-page "Did you know?" section at the back that shows a small picture of each animal and gives a fun fact about each. Example: Elk: Elk antlers grow about an inch a day during the summer. I can imagine that this book will be a candidate for re-reading and re-reading, noticing new things each time.

We had such a great time poring over the pages of this book. My kids loved reading the lists of animals. The author chose words that make your mouth move in all directions. Some of the animals we certainly hadn't heard of. So fun for me (the parent) to continue to be surprised by new creatures. My kindergartner loved seeing all the words that started with the same letter of the alphabet like she's doing in class. The fun facts at the back are fun and surprising--the kinds of facts with which you can impress the carpool immediately. Little hidden gems hidden throughout have been great to find on subsequent readings, too.

All in all, a wonderful book. I've recommended it to many friends and will continue to do so. Keep it up Mr. Cooper!

A very challenging ABC book of animals.

SUMMARY: On each page animals are illustrated and listed for each letter of the alphabet. For an extra challenge, there are 8 of one of the animals to seek and find. In the back of the book is a short "encyclopedia" listing the animals with a one sentence fact for each one.

ILLUSTRATIONS: The illustrations were created with paint. Unfortunately, they did not lend themselves well to the busy layout of this book. The animals are a little bit muddy. Add to that an ENTIRE page full of animals and it becomes very challenging to find each named animal. The pages are also lacking in color which decreases visual interest.

THE GOOD: This is a different type of ABC book. It is more of a seek and find and encyclopedia combined. At the bottom of each page is a list of the animals for that letter and you must seek each animal on the page. Plus, there are 8 of one of the animals to seek and count. Why 8? Because it is the author's favorite number. This book would be good for grades 1-2 classrooms and used with an animal unit. It is an opportunity to learn a large amount of new animal vocabulary. Children who need a challenge or who love animals will enjoy this book.
THE NOT AS GOOD: As stated above, the pages are very very busy. For the littlest ones trying to learn their ABCs or for pre-readers, this is very challenging. Many of the animals are not common animals so this is not a quick read-a-loud, but rather a learning opportunity that will take several sittings to get through. I did not know some of the animals and would have to look them up before being able to point them out to a child (such as a quoll, uakari, and kakapo).

AGE RECOMMENDATION: Advertised for ages 3-5, but lends itself better if used as an encyclopedia of animals for grades 1-2. If used for ages 3-5, I recommend using it for learning time rather than story time.

Aimless Explanations and Codes are NOT Working

I got this book through Safari Online Premium, and I would say this book has multiple issues. To provide some context, I have a technical degree and have 10+ years of software development (C, Perl, and Ruby on Rails). I picked up Laravel + PHP recently, but software development, the processes and conventions aren't daunting to me at all. With this context, here are the issues I found:

1) The code isn't verified at all, starting from Chapter 1. The codes just won't work. For example, consider the following phpspec code snippet:
function it_cannot_be_made_for_more_than_fifteen_days(User $user, $start_date, $end_date, Room $room)
{
$start_date = '2015-06-01';
$end_date = '2015-07-30';
$rooms = [$room];
$this->shouldThrow('\InvalidArgumentException')
->duringCreateNew( $user,$start_date,$end_date,$rooms);
}

The problem is '$user' is never defined anywhere!! As expected, 'phpspec run' complains loudly for not able to find MyCompany\User. I downloaded the sample code from Packt and to my horror, the 'app' directory is EMPTY. That means the author forgot to attach the relevant codes.

2) Use of phpspec and BDD (Behavior Driven Development): These aren't issues per-se, however the book is on teaching Laravel, not on PHP development best practices, so IMHO, adding the BDD is more of a distraction and an unnecessary layer of complexity. Adding insult to injury is the phpspec codes aren't working anyway...

3) No-reason-given style of explanation: The author started by stating he would build a hotel reservation system, but then he rushes off by building models, using phpspec, throwing lines of codes (and not bother to test them). I feel like getting dragged along by someone without telling me why and where we will get to.

This Person Should Not Be Allowed to Write Books

I currently have a PacktLib subscription which is why I haven't purchased this from Amazon.
I'm currently only in Chapter 1, and already the writing, proof-reading, and errors in this book are so appalling that it's unbelievable. The book does have some good general information, but the code samples/walkthroughs are just complete fail. It's completely not possible that someone, while proofreading, actually tried to follow along with how the author described proper workflow or how to build the code. Being a professional developer that uses Laravel, I could see the errors and know how to work around them, but a complete newbie would be lost and frustrated.

I bought this book several weeks ago to see if it could help complement other learning materials such as from Laracasts. In general, there are some useful things which will help your understanding of Laravel 5 - eg. understanding the Laravel 5 HTTP request flow compared to Laravel 4.

Some general points which I feel would have made the book better:
1) Greater explanation of the code on why/how things are done in a certain manner
2) Point out the pros/cons on building the code and possible alternative methods
3) More coverage of phpunit since TDD is covered in the book

A brillant and well written book!

This book was just what I wanted. If you like classical music you will like it. There are well known composers such as Mozart, Bach, and Beethoven as well as those not so well known such as Faure and Strauss. I really like how the selections are organized in order of difficulty and get progressively harder as you work through the book. The mp3s are very helpful in developing the correct timing and expression that the piece requires. The pace is not to fast or too slow. The mp3s are so good I listen to it alone. Well this book is a must for beginners as well as more advanced harmonica players!

Isaac Strack is a design technologist and STEM education advocate, currently working as a solutions consultant for Adobe Systems. With more than 15 years of experience in management information systems and web and creative technologies, Isaac has a strong background in modern web application development. He is the author of the Packt Publishing book Meteor Cookbook and the Packt Publishing video series Learning Meteor Application Development; he also assisted recently as a technical reviewer for another Packt Publishing book named Building Single-page Web Apps with Meteor. He holds a patent for online fraud detection and is a co-captain of the Salt Lake City Meteor Meetup group. He is an experienced lecturer/speaker. Excellent Intro to an Exciting Framework

This is an excellent introduction to Meteor. The book is short yet the content covered here is more than adequate. The author is a good teacher as well, incrementally introducing the reader to new concepts with a playful tone and he seems adept at anticipating the thought patterns and confusion points for beginners.

Sometimes, computer science authors write their books too much like their code itself, defining all their concepts up front (the way they would declare and set values for all the variables at the beginning of a function) and then expanding upon each piece in the section that follows. This pattern is not best for the reader: it's hard to get into a rhythm with the author and results in having to go back to the earlier portions of the book or chapter to re-read the way the author define their concepts as they finally start to sink in. I personally appreciate it when an author tries instead to establish a good flow and introduces ideas dynamically, at the time when each idea can be most appropriately introduced and can be reinforced most effectively by the surrounding content. This author seems to understand this pattern better than most and it makes him a good teacher for it.

What I enjoyed most about this book was the structure of the content, chapter by chapter. The book begins by trying to get you up and running with Meteor and building a simple application as quickly as possible, and its amazing how simple it is to get to that point! It isn't until the third chapter that you go through the necessary high-level discussions of the Meteor framework, the needs it addresses, the history of MVC-like patterns in web development, etc., and in most computer science books I believe you'd be reading through this stuff up-front, anxiously waiting to get started and see it in action. But this book has such a nice flow to it because discussions like these come at the appropriate time and have a reinforcing effect rather than leaving you feeling like "okay, get on with it and let's see some code". The latter half of the book then builds upon the earlier, simple application with more realistic looking UI design, C.R.U.D. operation implementation, authentication, robust configuration of role-based event broadcasting and database access, and finally to deployment. So you can definitely say the content here is covered from basics to basic tour of high-level concepts.

It's hard to be overwhelmed by what seems to be a glut of JavaScript frameworks out there, but after reading this book I think it would be even harder for one not to feel extremely excited by this one. Meteor is a full-stack JS framework and streamlines many high-level patterns and technologies that you'd end up implementing by hand in many other frameworks (or at least be mildly challenged to gather them all together with existing modules). Web socket integration (in a publish/subscribe pattern) between your data-store (by default is setup for you in Meteor as MongoDb) and client-side JS, the ability to operate offline, single-command project creation, single-command deployment, automatic file watching (live reload), easy 3rd party package integration (again, with a single command), and isomorphic JS are all available to you out-of-the-box with Meteor. I suppose Angular is following suite with Firebase, but - as the author mentions in the final chapter - you can even integrate Meteor with Angular or React if you prefer them as front-end clients. It's almost as if Meteor can be the glue that holds together many scattered technologies and techniques you've learned over the years in JS and allow you to focus instead on development.

Scratches the Surface

I think the subtitle Learn to develop powerful web applications in minutes with Meteor is a bit of a stretch. This is a brief introduction to Meteor. It will get you started, but you can get a comparable intro if you just go to the Meteor website and do their free To-do app tutorial. It would be difficult to find a comprehensive paper book because the platform is evolving so rapidly. The best resource I’ve found so far is the eBook by Discover Meteor which has been frequently updated although it is currently only Iron Router and Blaze (no Flow or React).

Quite useful if you are a beginning to intermediate developer

I have Isaac strack's Packtpub video on Meteor, his Meteor Cookbook and now this, so I am a bit familiar with his teaching style :)
There is no question that Issac knows his stuff well. This book is very good like his video and the cookbook. However, it is not titled appropriately. There is beginning material and then more advanced material mixed together. I have been working with Meteor for the last few months so I am a bit familiar with it. Without that knowledge, it would be difficult climb for a beginner as far as this book is concerned. But if you use this book in combination with other books and materials available on the web, then it is quite useful.
As far as the code that comes with the book, it works fine with a few minor glitches here and there. But I am experienced enough in Meteor to work through them. I am not sure if a rank beginner can do that. My constructive criticism of the code is that it can be refactored quite a bit to make it clearer, but may be the author had a page count limit on the book or something similar.
