Down by Law? Could you be?

Step back into the 1980's and enter Isis Carter's world ...where 8 tracks existed... cassette players were high in demand...chico sticks and squirrel nut candies were banging, pimps and their bottom bit-hes could have been your next door neighbor...and the glue of a phrase that seemed to hold it all together was simply just being..."Down by Law!" This latest story by NiNi Simone is one that will have you sitting on the edge of your seat...wanting to go to the back to see if Isis Carter made it out of the situations that she encountered...in one piece and maybe have a fairy tale ending of "Happily Ever After" or was she simply compelled to abide by the unwritten rule of being "Down by Law?" Once you open the book and enter into Isis Carter's world with her family and friends you will definitely be left with food for thought...and it will certainly leave you something to think about long after you have read the last sentence and closed the book.
There are many twists and turns, so many lessons, so much love in all the wrong places...This book is another page turner...another thought provoking read... and most of all what are the lessons are to be learned...could you? would you? want to be held to a creed of "Down by Law." How many Isis Carter's are there in the world?
Personally, this book touched me in a way that I didn't think a YA book could. It certainly was a read where I wanted the main character life to go "my way" but everything isn't always tied up perfectly with a pretty bow. There is always a lesson to be learned in what-ever situation one is involved in.
You must read this book to find out what Isis Carter's world taught her and what it might teach you. Afterwards, hopefully, the reader will then think of what contributions can "we" make to the world of the many "Isis Carters" to make it a place where dreams do and can come to fruition.
I certainly continue to enjoy NiNi Simone's YA reads and once again she has taken me inside of a book where I found myself to be totally and utterly emerged. As usual a job well done!

A good book for someone looking to glimpse at another person’s life – a life that is very different from their own.

In the never-ending quest to find new and diverse stories that will appeal to teen readers I have Down By Law by NiNi Simone. Set in the 1980’s, this story follows Isis Carter as she navigates life, love and family with the knowledge and attitude of a survivor.

Hard won knowledge is often skewed with a perspective of us versus them, and it is clear that Isis uses her knowledge and attitude as a shield: get them before they can hurt you. A touch of honest grit highlights Isis: she is justifiably angry and disillusioned with the life she knows: a brother murdered, a mother bailing out, a father who is less present and concerned…that anger and need for acceptance still exist, despite trying to pretend they don’t. While the choices aren’t always the best, there is a clear reason for Isis to make those connections, reasons that start to change as she learns that other paths could be available.

It’s a difficult book to rate – on one hand I wanted to see Isis make better choices for her life, and could see early on how some of those choices could lead to no good. I worried for her, and I kept thinking that something better was available. But, it wasn’t necessarily so: she needed to see and learn for herself, find her own path to realize that she needed to change things up. While I could see how many of the choices were between bad and worse, I couldn’t help but feel the honesty in the situations and the clarity with which Simone shows that divide – not every opportunity is seen, let alone available to everyone.

While this didn’t keep me on the edge of my seat – there was enough angst, drama and intrigue with Isis and her life to keep me reading through the last pages. A good book for someone looking to glimpse at another person’s life – a life that is very different from their own.

I had a difficult time reading this book. The language and dialogue required careful reading, which took me out of the story. While I also had a difficult time relating to the characters, there was a great character arc and an interesting plot.

About the Author
David Solomons has been writing screenplays for many years. His first feature film was an adaptation of Five Children and It (starring Kenneth Branagh and Eddie Izzard, with gala screenings at the Toronto and Tribeca Film Festivals). His latest film is a romantic comedy set in the world of publishing, Not Another Happy Ending (Karen Gillan, Iain de Caestecker), which closed the Edinburgh International Film Festival. My Brother is a Superhero is his first novel for children. He was born in Glasgow and now lives in Dorset.

I got this at the library and wasn’t even 3 chapters in before I was laughing my X-ray vision goggles off. This clever book is written from the viewpoint of the younger brother Luke, who has to teach his brother Zack how to be a superhero named Star Guy… with the help of his best friend (Serge) and his brother’s crush’s little sister (Laura). At first, I was unsure about this book. Boys sometimes make a big deal out of gross stuff that girls like me really could not care less about. But these boys don’t. They’re clean-spoken, mostly good mannered, and have a great family. I loved the way that the final chapters made me react with “I KNEW IT!!” Have I mentioned that the ending was a great cliff-hanger? Well it is, and I’d love a sequel.
The humor is clean and certainly enjoyable for any superhero fan. (And for anyone who likes sponge cake.) This book mentions both DC and Marvel supers, but it seems pretty fairly balanced. If I didn’t know a single thing about being a superhero, I’d look to this book as a guide for the most basic of basics and the most entertaining end-of-the-world situations.

If I could give more than 5 stars, I could. You go, Star Guy! (and awesome Luke!)

Per my 8 year old "Good for kids who like comics AND parents who want to read regular books. I really liked this,and I hope another book about a friend becoming a super hero" It was really interesting, and had lots of action. I couldn't wait to finish it, and now I want to read more like it"

Nice book

It is a VERY good book for the IELTS exam preparation. It is especially helpful for the first writing assignment (diagram/graph/chart) and speaking section. However, it is not a full textbook: no CDs for listening, no texts for reading, no trial test, etc. I used this book along with several textbooks ("101 Helpful Hints for IELTS" and "Action Plan") and Cambridge practice tests (7 and 6). This books gives a rather good strategy, but it shouldn't be used alone for preparation. BTW, I got 8 score at the exam!

This is the MUST HAVE book if you are preparing yourself for IELTS. I always thought IELTS is about proficiency in English but i was wrong. IELTS is all about techniques and strategies in answering the 4 components of IELTS.

I have purchased the e-book a few months ago but didn't have time to sit in front of the computer quietly to study. With the hardcopy available now, i can bring it along wherever i go and it's really handy. It not only provides me with the necessary knowledge to sit for the IELTS but also improve my English generally. Thanks Simone for writing this book and i highly recommend this book if you are preparing for IELTS.

Strong Guide-Short time

First i started without this book, but later by using this book my score going more better in practice exam, My advice is you can use this book as strong guide to target your IELTS Band in short time.
For Non-English people whom having good level in English they can use the same with some addtional practice exams...

24- Aug -2015 - update: There is an overlap of content with PMP exam. Hence, if you have already completed your PMP or currently preparing for PMP, then PMI-PBA exam might turn out to be relatively less hard, then a total PMI newbie taking the exam.

Not totally sophomoric gibberish

I have been reading this book in fits and starts over the past month, trying to decide if it's good or bad. I am 63-years-old and still writing code. The grumpy old man in me can't believe that anyone wrote a book about software metrics without a bibliography or acknowledging the seminal work in the field by Grady and Caswell (Software Metrics: Establishing a Company-Wide Program) and Boehm (Software Engineering Economics). But this is a good book, even if it appears to be written by someone with no knowledge of the field before Extreme Programming came along.

The book starts out by acknowledging that a common principle of Agile development is “Only measure what matters” but then dismisses that idea by calling it a “bad tenet” because “How do you know what matters? When do you start tracking new things and when do you stop tracking others? Because these are hard questions, metrics end up getting thrown by the wayside when they could be providing value. A better wording would be measure everything and figure out why metrics change unexpectedly.’” I read this and thought “get off my lawn! How can anyone write a book about metrics and not tell us how to measure what matters?” But sure enough, most of the rest of the text addresses the fundamental issue of figuring out what matters, and to whom.

The author relies on an analysis tool called “mind mapping” which is new to me. From what I can gather about this technique (from googling it) I can imagine he conceived of a book about Agile Software Metrics and then broke it down into component parts. The book is well-organized, sometimes to a fault: each chapter starts with an outline of what he is going to say, then he says it, and then he closes the chapter by summarizing what he said. Sometimes this is really good, like when you been reading the book in stolen moments at work and at home (as I did, mostly), but other times it gets a bit tedious and I found myself thinking “could we possibly just get to the point?”

The final chapter is the best, talking about Agile principles in general and getting into some specific metrics that can be useful and are measurable. A lot of the book leading up to final chapter is more descriptive of the different stages of Agile development, what tools are available at each stage to collect metrics, and how different people in the organization have different questions they want answered by metrics. I found the discussion of Continuous Development to be really interesting – it actually got me to recall an article I read 31 years ago in Scientific American (September 1984) by Alan Kay about the software and where it might be heading in the future, back then.

How to figure out what matters and then measure it to help your team work as productively as possible in an Agile world

The Agile methodology (or approach) to software development is still relatively new. The promise of Agile, when it is not used as an elaborate cover for the old no-process no-planning no-accountability way software was developed in the Very Bad Old Days, is that customers can be made happy with continuous delivery of software that gets ever closer to what they want - usable software that works without bugs and without security risks.

So how do you find out whether your Agile team is producing as well as it can? What do you measure? How do you measure it? In the new world of development and build and tracking tools, almost everything can be instrumented to provide data. So how do you fulfill the Agile goal of measuring only what matters? How do you figure out what matters? Davis has provided lots of measurement tools with examples of the metrics produced AND several case studies that show how to implement his ideas AND guidance on how to discover what matters in your situation by measuring various things. Finally, there is guidance on how to match metrics to the Agile principles and how to use the metrics to improve your team and processes - and products, which is what your customers care about. And then there is an appendix with full and explicit info on constructing a metrics system using commonly available tools.

This is a highly technical book; you have to understand the jargon and know modern software engineering and build processes to understand it and benefit from it There is no list of acronyms and no glossary of concepts, so you really have to know the field. The index is spotty and inconsistent, a minor irritant. None of this ultimately matters if you're part of the intended audience of this book - Agile teams and their first-level supervisors and leads.

Cogent, Well-Written Book on the Rich Field of Agile Development

This is straightforward and practical guide on Agile Metrics aimed primarily at software teams already familiar with agile principles and working in accordance with these methodologies. Written by a software engineer experienced in leading such teams, this book explains the role of agile metrics in this process and goes on at length to discuss what and which kinds of data should be collected and how. It then recommends how the data can be analyzed and disseminated for maximum effectiveness and impact.

According to the author, “A metric can come from a single data source or it can be a combination of data from multiple data sources. Any data point that you track eventually becomes a metric that you can use to measure your team’s performance.” These multiple sources include project-tracking systems, source control, deployment servers and other production systems. In addition, Agile Metrics can be used to measure the technical quality of your software and the performance of the team itself (i.e., levels of communication, productivity, morale, etc.). However, the author cautions that introducing this type of analysis into a company unfamiliar with its tenets may very well encounter difficulties unless the management and personnel are fully informed of what these processes involve.

Overall I found this book to be enlightening and challenging. As a newbie to the field of agile development, I was intrigued by the software tools it recommends, that are applicable to many development situations. I plan to pass this book on to my IT team for additional comment and review.

Works well, includes all components

Works as expected!

I purchased a new item from a third party seller, and as indicated, the kit contains a circuit board and other necessary components. The only thing you need to add is a 9V battery (a soldering iron, pliers, wire stripper, wire cutters, and a screwdriver are necessary to assemble the kit, and some glue or hot melt glue is helpful to hold the microphone down).

The kit is pretty easy to assemble if you are comfortable soldering stuff, and the instruction manual is in both English and German. The manual includes a few experiments/suggestions for different ultrasound sources to listen to.

The circuit appears to use a heterodyne detection system, so you will need to optimize the local oscillator frequency (with the frequency knob) to listen to different sources.

Great book, covers all the basics about how to ...

Great book, covers all the basics about how to get an Android development environment up and running with OpenCV for Android on either Mac or Windows, with several example apps covering some basic use cases of OpenCV in an app setting. Highly recommended for beginners in this area, you can get an app up and running in less than a hour.

A worthwhile read!

I've worked with OpenCV for a few years now, mostly on personal projects with a few professional applications scattered here and there, and I can safely say that Android Application Programming with OpenCV 3 will give you a clear, solid foundation on the topics covered. Discussed in the book are various things that you need to know to start working with OpenCV, specifically with the Android mobile platform, such as setting up the Eclipse IDE, and getting OpenCV native runtimes installed and working (a feat that is not particularly easy with a guide). It also delves into the complicated subject of OpenCV itself, of course, which can also be daunting, but the book explains the subject in a fairly understandable way. I particularly found the Image recognition section, and as someone who has worked on an application with that feature, I know how difficult this topic can be, especially when discussing the finer points of OpenCV's convoluted datatypes, but the author does this well, and I feel like I definitely learned quite I bit!

Overall, I can say that I really enjoyed the book.

Content is already outdated the day the book was published.

Google has decided to discontinue Eclipse before this book got published and yet knowing this fact the author still decides to use Eclipse as the development environment because "for our purposes, Eclipse is a bit more convenient than Android Studio". As a result of this poor decision the book is already outdated the day it was published at the end of June 2015. Google has discontinued Eclipse and I only have Android Studio in my computer. I was wondering what the author would say about that.
