Everything you need to know about this useful resource!!

I have been an avid Native American Style Flute (NASF) player and maker for years. Coincidentally, I am also an author (though not of NASF-making books.)

What I appreciate most about Mr. Fuqua's book is that he has made a considerable amount of beginning flute-making information available at a very affordable price. As of this writing, there continues to be a dearth of affordable NASF-making books--not to mention a lack of flute-making books in general. The very few that exist are either out of print or are quite expensive (at least to my pocketbook). In this regard Mr. Fuqua has made a MUCH-NEEDED contribution, and I truly commend him for it.

Before getting into the making of NASF's per se, Mr. Fuqua begins with a helpful, even if relatively brief, chapter on the historical "Backstory" of Native American Flutes (NAFs). (If you want more backstory information, you might want to check out Fuqua's previous book, "The Native American Flute: Myth, History, Craft.")

So that there's no confusion, and especially for the sake of new flute makers who may be thinking of selling your flutes one day, allow me to say a word about terminology. I own both NAFs and NASFs. The difference depends on WHO made them. According to the laws set forth in the 1990 Indian Arts & Crafts Act, a flute made by a genuine bloodline Native American (or "Indian") may be properly called a "Native American Flute" (NAF). Otherwise, any flutes made by non-Native Americans must be called or labeled "Native American Style Flutes" (NASF), or something conveying meaning to the same effect. In fact, in the United States, wrongfully claiming that an artifact (like a flute) is crafted by "an Indian" is a felony offense. Hope this brief explanation helps.

Back to Fuqua's book, after the Backstory chapter he then wisely goes on to discuss the various materials that flutes can be made of; various finishes; care and maintenance; and musical scales as they pertain to Native American flute making.

He then goes on to elaborate on the different styles of flute making, from the ancient Anasazi flute to the modern two-chamber flute, from the traditional to the drone as well as others. And in doing so he shows you how to make these flutes from several different materials, including wood, bamboo, and PVC.

The book concludes with a chapter on various Sources as well as a Bibliography. Although the Sources pages and Bibliography are quite thin, it's still enough valuable information to get the beginner going in the right direction. I recommend that you do not merely gloss or skip over these sections.

Incidentally, the book's 8" X 10" trim size does indeed make it very suitable for using/reading on a workbench. I don't know whether it was designed the following way on purpose, but the relatively large pages also helpfully provide many blank margin spaces for inserting written notes and not-to-be-forgotten, golden-nugget reminders that you discover along the way.

However, the book's greatest strength--providing info on crafting various NASFs from a variety of materials--is also its most notable weakness. In other words, while the book's breadth is most commendable, it nonetheless suffers from a considerable lack of depth AND details--which, in my opinion, is usually necessary for most brand-new flute makers.

But this criticism, along with my wish that the book's many pictures and diagrams would have been in color (instead of black and white) are in fact relatively minor. For example, if the pictures had been published in color, such an improvement would definitely have added considerable cost to the book's price. Moreover, given the book's breadth, if Mr. Fuqua had added much more explanatory detail to the book, it may have become rather unwieldy, and certainly would have raised the price precipitously.

With that said, I believe Mr. Fuqua has struck a very useful and understandable balance. He doesn't wish to overwhelm the reader, and the book will answer most of a newbie's most basic flute-building questions.

As I have implied, however, most new flute makers WILL understandably have more questions and will necessarily need more details from time to time. Toward that end, the Internet has answers and details galore--IF you know where to look for them. I can suggest what I believe to be the three BEST repositories of FREE, web-related information that can supplement your reading of Mr. Fuqua's book, and will answer 99% or more of your questions:

1) The Native Flute Woodworking -- Native Flute, Yahoo Group. (Free to join.) Link: [...]
2) The Basic (but complete) NAFlute making, Yahoo Group. (Free to join.)

3)[...] (Free, no membership required.) Flutopedia is like an online encyclopedia for anything and everything related to the NAF. Updated & expanded regularly, it is an ever-growing treasure trove of information.

I highly, HIGHLY recommend all three of these resources. Again, they should be viewed as complements to Mr. Fuqua's book, NOT as a replacement. The overwhelming majority of novice flute makers find it very valuable--if not necessary--to have a well laid-out, clear and readable starting point. To have a basic, beginners book on which to rely to begin crafting NASFs. It makes things a whole heckuva lot easier and much less confusing when beginning your flute-making journey.

Mr. Fuqua's "Native American Flute Craft" is a laudable, informative, and (let's not forget!) is a VERY affordable place to begin that rich & rewarding journey. It can get you started right away, crafting your very first hand-made NASF.

Great read, gifted writer

Easy flow of information, historical and technical, yet this is not a highly technical manual so it's easy for the lay person to understand. Although not of Native American blood, the author has done extensive research and imbues an enthusiasm for woodcrafting and Native American fluting and culture that entices the reader to go out and make a beginner's flute on a budget. I have not completed one yet, but I've tried one tip for adding a channel to the bottom of a fetish and so far it is working well. There are several other tips which seem to simplify flute making and so I'm excited to experiment with them. The author discusses the variety of flute making techniques by others and indicates problems or failures to avoid from his own personal experience, plus he gives clear step-by-step checklists for his preferences accompanied by photographs.

Wood, bamboo, clay, pvc...all four materials are covered. Wax, oil, varnish, shellac, polyurethane, laquer, water based finishes are all discussed. Bindings, repairs, general care of flutes, tuning secrets, Anasazzi instructions, drone flute instructions, contrabass pvc, and more. Even building a case and storing your instrument in proper humidity. Pretty much a complete resource.

This book contains explanations, not just how-to material which proves Fugua's respect for the intelligent reader. There are lots of resource choices referenced for material sources, links for expanding knowledge, extensive bibliography. Overall a very fine introduction and instruction book for first time flute makers.

In closing, because of my interest in NAF and appreciation of really good writing I sensed a warmth and eagerness from Mr. Fugue in sharing the experience of his flute journey and would recommend this book to anyone seriously considering making and playing their first Native American Style flute. I would also include this book as a valuable resource for scout troops, woodshop educators, native instrument musicians, music teachers and public libraries.

Great resource for making a flute - and a good read.

I first heard a Native American Flute on a mountain in Tennessee while surrounded by April wildflowers. I was enchanted, but didn't know enough to ask even basic questions. I just simply enjoyed the haunting music. Later, reading about this instrument, I was informed that almost everyone who starts playing will soon have a collection. How true. I found C.S. Fuqua's first book - Native American Flute Myth, History, and Craft. From those instructions I made a PVC flute which is quite playable. Since then I have played several, bought two, and have crafted a couple more from PVC. My next project is a multi barrel flute that assembles in two parts, making it easy to take along in a backpack or tote.

Native American Flute Craft expands on the first book. It provides a great history of world flutes. Virtually every culture has devised a flute. One has been found to date some 35,000 years ago.

These are folk instruments meant to be enjoyed by individuals. No real instruction is necessary, but easily found online. It's a simple instrument to play. The instructions for following this tradition and making your own include using wood, bamboo, or PVC. The instructions and photos are clear and the information about where to place the sound and tuning holes are excellent.

The author has done an excellent job of compiling extensive information and creating helpful instructions. His love and passion for building and playing Native American Flutes is obvious.

I love this one, I find it really fascinating! This book contains interesting facts about mystical creatures we often hear from our grandparents, stories that passed on from generations to generations. This book touches on the history of paranormal cryptozoology. Be fascinated by stories like Loch Ness Monster, the Giant Anaconda, the Abominable Snowman, Thunderbird and many more. Very entertaining book! Myth or reality? Some of the creatures described in the book seem to be a hoax, others... I'm not so sure. Certainly piques one's imagination! The reader is left feeling the real possibility of the existence of some very strange animals!

Well-written survey!

This book was available for free on Kindle when I found it, so the very least I can do for the author is leave a review. I am happy to say I enjoyed this book, and it introduced me to a couple of cryptids which were totally new to me!

I had never heard of the Beast of Bodmoor. Exmoor, yes, but not Bodmoor. I had also never heard of Flying Rods. I had heard a tiny bit about the Bunyip and the Wendigo, but the Beast of Gevaudan was a complete surprise. I was so happy to learn more about the world's legendary creatures. To be honest, before this book I knew more about the World of Darkness Bunyip and Wendigo then the legends that gave the game developers the names.

Bauer only spends a few pages per cryptid, but he gives extensive citations for further followup. His tone is skeptical, and he is unafraid to admit where there is scanty evidence or a known history of hoaxes. He's also unafraid to let his complete disbelief show, as in the Flying Rods chapter. While he is diplomatic, he seems to give more weight to the debunkers than the promoters of this photographic phenomenon.

I look forward to reading other books by Bauer, and giving my thoughts on them as well. Four of five stars.

Disappointing. . .

I have studied the paranormal and the occult nearly my whole life and in this time there are very many things in this avenue that I have learned, in fact many have changed my life completely and the way I look at the world. So, you can understand my frustration as I'm reading this and the author is carelessly throwing all caution to the wind and disregarding everything I have learned through so many years of meticulous study and that has me convinced whoever this person is (or whoever he thinks he is) he has not done the research to back up any of his outlandish claims: for instance that there is more evidence to support the yeti than bigfoot, that there is no evidence to support the growing idea of the Reptilians despite the heaping world of proof in every ancient civilization across the world that all our ancestors worshipped snakes, the Nagas, the "Gods". On top of being entirely too disappointed by the lack of real effort or support in his theories I find the book to be too short and could be far more in depth considering all the hundreds, perhaps thousands, of credible witness accounts of these phenomena. This book was written by an amateur and I would never recommend it to anyone. In fact, I whole-heartedly regret wasting the very little amount of money I spent on it in the first place.

Informative read

A very interesting, informative read into paranormal creatures, it has a very balanced look into the different creatures such as the Loch Ness monster, The Yeti, The Giant Anaconda and the beast of Bodmin just to name a few. I am extremely interested in Cryptozoology and found that this book had great explains in it to each creature some of which I had never heard of before. I definitely recommend to anyone interested in this genre.

Great Aid!

This book is basically amazing! It is written by a man who's gotten a perfect score on the ACT over six times and he takes the test every time it is administered so that he can learn more about it each time. If you are a student who waits until literally the week before to start studying for the ACT, I HIGHLY recommend this book. It provides helpful tips (e.g. the fact that the answer "its'" should never be chosen because it is grammatically impossible) that help you master the ACT! Also, it is spot-on about what you should do to get through the test without running out of time.

I bought at least 4 other test prep books for my daughter. The others are gathering dust, but she is actually using this one. The book is easy to use and not intimidating like some of the other big books. The tips are practical and logical. I don't know how she'll score on the test, but if she raises her score even one point, the book will have been worth it.

Did the job!

My son took a Princeton Review practice ACT and got a 30 - 29, 29, 31, 31. It was a solid score and we hoped for the same on the real thing. He studied a bit but basically counted on reading this book a week before the test. Well, imagine our surprise when he brought up three out of four scores and directly attributed it to the book: 29 to 32, 31 to 34 and 31 to 36!!! We highly recommend this book to all college bound students.

About the Author
Stephen Johnson studied genetics at Cambridge University before qualifying as a solicitor in 1982. He subsequently also qualified as an attorney and worked in the US for Kirkland & Ellis LLP for over thirty years, most recently in San Francisco. He now focuses on intellectual property (IP) from a business perspective and also consults for the US charity One Mind on IP and other policy issues affecting neuroscience research.

In 2015 he was named as one of the world’s leading IP strategists by Intellectual Asset Management in its IAM Strategy 300 survey.

Great source of information

This is perhaps the most effective book you will find to learn about the Middle East. The book is well written, concise (considering the breadth of time and geography covered), and informative. An easy read for those that are interested in the subject matter. I would recommend this book as the starting point for anyone interested about the Middle East and Central Asia (since Central Asia has been and continues to be interrelated).

I read the 6th edition many years ago and purchased the 10th edition for the update. I would recommend it for anyone deploying, working, or living in the region. The information gleaned was extremely helpful in understanding current political and cultural issues. There are instances where the author suggests his own personal political opinions, but if you can ignore such comments (they tend to stand out), then the book will serve as an excellent historical text.

Simon Riggs

Simon Riggs is the CTO of 2ndQuadrant and an active PostgreSQL committer. He has contributed to PostgreSQL as a major developer for more than 10 years, having written and designed many new features in every release over that period. His feature credits include replication, performance, business intelligence, management, and security. Under his guidance, 2ndQuadrant is now a leading developer of open source PostgreSQL and a platinum sponsor of the PostgreSQL Project, serving hundreds of clients in USA, Europe, Asia-Pacific,the Middle East, and Africa. Simon is a frequent speaker at many conferences and is well known for his speeches on PostgreSQL Futures and different aspects of replication. He has worked with many different databases as a developer, architect, data analyst, and designer with companies across USA and Europe for nearly 30 years.

Gianni Ciolli

Gianni Ciolli is a principal consultant at 2ndQuadrant Italia, where he has been working since 2008 as a developer, consultant, and trainer. He has spoken at PostgreSQL conferences in Europe and abroad, and his other IT skills include functional languages and symbolic computing. Gianni has a PhD in mathematics, and is the author of published research on Algebraic Geometry, Theoretical Physics, and Formal Proof Theory. He previously worked at the University of Florence as a researcher and teacher. Gianni has been working on free and open source software for almost 20 years. From 2001 to 2004, he was a cofounder and the president of PLUG, short for Prato Linux User Group. He organized many sessions of the Italian PostgreSQL conference, and in 2013, he was elected to the board of ITPUG, the Italian PostgreSQL Users Group. He currently lives in London with his son. His other interests include music, drama, poetry, and sport―athletics in particular, where he competes in combined events.

Hannu Krosing

Hannu Krosing is a principal consultant at 2ndQuadrant and a technical advisor at Ambient Sound Investments. As the original database architect at Skype Technologies, he was responsible for designing the SkyTools suite of replication and scalability technology. He has worked with and contributed to the PostgreSQL project for more than 12 years.

Gabriele Bartolini

Gabriele Bartolini is a long-time open source programmer, a principal consultant with 2ndQuadrant, and an active member of the international PostgreSQL community. Gabriele has a degree in statistics from the University of Florence. His areas of expertise are data mining and data warehousing, and he has worked on web traffic analysis in Australia and Italy. He currently lives in Prato, a small but vibrant city located in the northern part of Tuscany, Italy. His second home is Melbourne, Australia, where he studied at Monash University and worked in the ICT sector. Gabriele's hobbies include playing his Fender Stratocaster electric guitar and "calcio" (football or soccer, depending on which part of the world you come from).

Clearly presented recipes by active PostgreSQL committers

This book provides helpful material for those like myself who are relatively new to PostgreSQL, but not new to relational database products. While I had some earlier exposure to PostgreSQL, it was not until reading a book by Eric Redmond and Jim Wilson a couple years ago called "Seven Databases in Seven Weeks" (see my review) that I was forced to consider PostgreSQL as a viable alternative to dominant commercial databases, having been a longtime user of Oracle, DB2, and in the past few years, SQL Server. When recently faced with recommending a relational database product to a new client open to options who ended up choosing PostgreSQL from one of my top two recommendations, however, I knew that I needed to get acquainted with the product in a relatively short time period.

Books which cover PostgreSQL are becoming more available as adoption of the database product increases, but compared to the other aforementioned databases there are very few from which to choose (although this is partially due to the fact that the online reference materials are considered excellent in general and particularly good from an open source perspective). While I value the online reference materials provided by PostgreSQL, as well as the open source community, I typically prefer a text if a decent one is available and the technologies involved are not too bleeding edge. Packt Publishing seems to have the most texts available at this point in time, and I considered some of their other offerings such as "PostgreSQL for Data Architects" and "PostgreSQL Developers Guide", but these seemed to be targeting differing audiences.

The authors claim to present "over 150 recipes to help you run an efficient PostgreSQL database in the cloud", and while I have not taken the time to count them, this book is hefty at about 450-pages in length, which might initially shy away some potential readers. However, what the authors present is organized very well, and readers should not feel obliged to read it in order from cover-to-cover, since it is written in a practical manner in order to provide quick answers to common questions and problems. The content is progressively presented in 12 chapters: "First Steps", "Exploring the Database", "Configuration", "Server Control", "Tables and Data", "Security", "Database Administration", "Monitoring and Diagnosis", "Regular Maintenance", "Performance and Concurrency", "Backup and Recovery", and "Replication and Upgrades".

Each of these topics are covered in a clear, step-by-step manner that I think many technologists will appreciate. Just be aware that the authors do not cover development per se. This aspect does not bother me as a database architect for web applications, because I typically seek to minimize database development, but those who disagree with this philosophy or wish to use PostgreSQL for a data project (such as data warehousing or data integration) may want to consider other supplementary books offered by this publisher. One last point in which some readers might be interested is that this book was written by active PostgreSQL committers, including Simon Riggs who has contributed to PostgreSQL as a major developer for more than 10 years, and shares some especially good insights in the last two chapters.

The author obviously has the right to publish a book like this. His writing skills are great and easy to understand! This book has tons of tips and techniques on how to write a book in a short span of time. I admire Ernst Jones writing and I will definitely follows all his tips.

I love reading books, so it is natural for me to fall in love with writing as well. I have a lot of ideas already collected, but I haven't found time to actually wrap them up in a compelling and hopefully bestselling book.

In this book, the author shows us how we can write an awesome book in just 21 days. It might sound too good to be true right initially, but after you get through the book, you will see it is possible. The author not only shares the "how" of things, there are also tips included in the book. It even guides on how to have the book published and get the bestseller status. I like the cheat sheet provided here. I am hoping I can have this cheat sheet printed.

About the Author
Laurent L Jacque is the Walter B Wriston Professor of International Finance & Banking at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy (Tufts University) and Director of its International Business Studies Program. He is the author of two books — Management and Control of Foreign Exchange Risk (Kluwer Academic Publishers, 1996), and Management of Foreign Exchange Risk: Theory and Praxis (Lexington Books, 1978) — as well as many articles on International Risk Management, Multinational Control Systems and Capital Markets. He served as an advisor and consultant to the Foreign Exchange Rate Forecasting Service of Wharton Econometrics, Forecasting Associates (1982–1990) and as a member of Water Technologies Inc's board of directors (1991–1994). Jacque received the James L Paddock award for teaching excellence at The Fletcher School in 1996. He is a consultant to a number of firms in the area of corporate finance and risk management and has taught in many Management Development Programs, including Manufacturers Hanover Trust, Merck, Sharp & Dohme, Philadelphia National Bank, General Motors, Bunge and Born (Brazil), Rhone-Poulenc (France), Siam Commercial Bank (Thailand), Daewoo (South Korea), General Electric, Dupont de Nemours, Norwest Bank, Bangkok Bank (Thailand), INSEAD, Pechiney, Petrobras and the IFC (World Bank group).
