THINLEY NORBU (1931–2011) was a master teacher of the Nyingma lineage of Tibetan Buddhism, with many devoted students in the West as well as Asia. Short and sweet, not a book to be read, but manual to be meditated on

Sunlight Speech That Dispels the Darkness of Doubt: Sublime Prayers, Praises, and Practices of the Nyingma Masters Rinpoche gave us a volume of traditional Tibetan texts that are instructions for the visualization, meditation, contemplation, awakening, published in an American hardcover binding, in English language, available for mail order through global mainstream company like amazon... Simple, short, sweet... It is here, it has arrived.

To practice these one would do well to go any local Tibetan Buddhist Nyingma Center and it is highly likely that something from this selection is already used there.

For a few of other Rinpoche books I wrote that they are not books but rather experiences on display, in front of us. This book is a road map to these experiences.

Be sure you know what you're getting

I find this a very difficult book to rate, so I give it a middling grade. Personally I didn't like most of it (will get to that soon), but I also see that for the right audience this will be a sublime treat. The printing is very high quality and the translations seem very good (very straight forward, easy to understand and lacking some of Thinley Norbu's more creative and quirky phrasing).

I think this is probably a good book for someone who is feeling great devotion and serious dedication to the traditional practices (for instance someone reading this during a retreat). It is mostly concerned with that quality of unquestioning faith that is emphasized in conventional Guru Yoga practice, so perhaps it will be inspirational for some, just don't expect the kind of direct wisdom that cuts through time and place and puts you in the space of your primordial birthless awareness.

Like I said at first if you are within the intended audience this will probably all be great. I don't fit into this select niche, but my initial response was also strongly tinged by Norbu's introductory comments when he mentioned that it is so hard to translate Tibetan into English because (paraphrasing here) Tibetan is so sublime and the perfect dharma language, while English is a nihilist, materialist vehicle of communication with very poor dharma potential. Alrighty then...and yet we're supposed to feel blessed to have at least this version available in our mundane tongue. This kind of xenophobic hubris is not just a turn off for those of us who love the dharma but just so happen to be born into English speaking cultures (and even appreciate the opportunities that come with that), it also shows a not so subtle lack of respect and appreciation for the sublime qualities of other people and cultures in general, and makes me wonder if Norbu, who I always thought was a great Lama, really ever understood Westerners.

After that mood setting intro I felt most of these selections were actually pretty boring, VERY conventional, flowery and wordy religious tracts, lacking nuance and creativity and humor (you might say humor doesn't belong in serious devotional writings, but anyone who actually has known Tibetans knows this is foolish, and personally I know a sense of the absurd has always cut through my habitual mental constructs much more effectively than earnest effort). Yes, there is lots of pious outpouring here, and some jewels of wisdom too (how can there not be with the works of these truly great lamas - Longchenpa, Jigme Lingpa, Patrul, Mipham and Dudjom Rinpoches!), but what comes across mostly is veneration for the container the wisdom is held in (like a traditional Tibetan vase, highly stylized and ornate, and well, very precious).

Of these diverse selections the Lion's Roar by Jigme Lingpa stands out as most practical and instructive, and is actually excellent. I thought the two sadhanas by Mipham and Dudjom Rinpoches were odd inclusions since most people actually doing these kinds of practices have sadhanas provided by their lama. That being said I did like the "Rain of Blessings" by Mipham (a Guru Yoga prayer in connection with the 7-line Prayer), a beautiful and eloquent expression of devotion.

Overall, despite the quality production and packaging, I was disappointed and was hoping Thinley Norbu's last work would give us something to break down boundaries and reveal the playful universal essence of the nature of mind (like what he was getting at with his first book Magic Dance: The Display of the Self-Nature of the Five Wisdom Dakinis). Instead he leaves us with a very traditional and safe expression of Tibetan Buddhism. It's obvious that it's what he most valued and cherished and was nurtured by, and saw as most important for continuing the legacy of. But from the perspective of this modern American, who has moved on from idolizing the precious container, it seems perhaps something more fit for a museum than for an open inquiring mind… Which reminds me of the famous Nietzsche quote, "If you wish to strive for peace of soul and pleasure, then believe; if you wish to be a devotee of truth, then inquire…."

Don't start your essays before reading this book!

I've thought very carefully about making this statement, and must submit that this book contributed significantly to my daughter's successful application process. Her grades were hardly top level, but, inspired by McGinty's clear and direct recommendations, she worked hard on her essays and is now enrolled in an Ivy League college. Unlike other purportedly helpful books in this field, this one focuses on the reflective and personal process that actually makes this rite of passage an edifying one for the student. McGinty helps her readers write an essay that will fulfill its purpose; i.e., enable a college admissions officer to learn about the applicant. Rather than dictating a series of rote "How-tos," she encourages self-exploration and -expression as a means to this end. Her unique perspective as an educator and college admissions consultant make her eminently qualified to guide a teenager through the swamp that the application essays can come to feel like. As a writing teacher myself, I wholeheartedly recommend this book.

One of the weaker College Application Essay books

This book seems to be written from a literary perspective and not a college application perspective. It clearly doesn't take chances where it has to, such as giving clear examples of points only titled in the book. This book should change its name to "How to Write a Paper for College," as it does just that.

The first 66 pages are what you would find in any beginning composition class, but as seniors approaching college, students need more than just the basics. Almost all of the examples aren't even application essay examples, but literary examples which don't serve a purpose. Examples such as an introduction on Dickens is completely useless. How about an introduction for a college application essay? And the examples go on from there: desert animals, The Simpsons, Hamlet, Moby Dick, and a comparison of FDR and Wilson. It's almost as if the writer can't write a good application essay, which is why the examples are literary and historical in nature. and not really talking about a college applicant and what makes them an individual, unique, and special, for the college he or she wants to attend..

What students really need are powerful introductions, a method of bringing themselves out in an essay, and memorable conclusions, not just worthless literary examples for English 101.

Excellent book; if you want real advice on how to write a stellar application essay, this is the guide for you. At first, I purchased a few other books on the topic, but they were not helpful because they simply cited positive aspects of other students' essays. It's hard (and not advisable) to copy other people's writing. Also, these books were all about "selling yourself," and produced very canned, artificial drafts.

After hearing many great things about McGinty's book, I found that it helped me craft an essay which reflected my character, spirit, and ideas-- my essay soon dramatically changed into a more interesting and powerful part of my application. Using these strategies, I was admitted to a top 5 college and a top 5 law school despite my less-than-great test scores. You will not regret this investment!!

I have been following Jeremiah Boehner's work for a while and I can say that he does an excellent job. Mr. Boehner puts significant effort into these books and truly believes in helping his readers develop in the careers. This book contains over 60 valuable tools for a content marketer and I can say that this is the first book I turn to when I need advice for content marketing.

Coming up with and creating fresh content for anything - a website, blog, Facebook page, or book - can be a challenging prospect if it is something that needs to be done on an ongoing basis. Author Jeremiah Boehner has written a wonderful guide to "Content Marketing" that includes over 60 tools to help keep things fresh and moving. As someone who does create content on a continuous basis, I found many of Boehner's tools to be very unique and things that I could implement in my work immediately. This is a very well written and well organized guide that I will continue to refer back to.

A Jurrasic View of this Book

This isn't so much a review of the quality of Mr. Burd's book. This is more a short narrative of how a programmatic dinosaur (at least this one) adapts to modern coding, and how books like those of Mr. Burd's might help. To summarize the stuff below: 1) this book attempts to teach Java and Android concurrently; 2) that's a lot of new and complicated stuff for a dinosaur to try to absorb at the same time, and 3) it might be easier to try to learn Java first (e.g., Java for Dummies, or something like it), then use this book to see how Java and Android work together.

(If you're younger than 50 don't bother to read the rest of this review; it's written in a foreign language.) I learned to program on a B5500 (which was, at the time, brand new). Fortran. I progressed, using the term loosely, to assembler, ALGOL, COBOL, c, Pascal, Univac, IBM, DEC, etc.. I admit all this only to establish without doubt that I am a dinosaur. Although I haven't done any programming in a long time, I recently decided to learn to write programs that run on my cell phone (i.e, apps!). I have a Samsung phone, and so I needed to learn Java and Android. Hence my interest in Mr. Burd's book.

The first problem was my misconception that I could learn this language/OS just like I learned the other ones. Wrongo. Java isn't Fortran (or even C++). Even people who wrote good structured code (remember that) will be thrown by the nature and degree of program structure imposed by Java (not to say that's bad, but it's very different). Second, the relationship between the language and the OS (Java and Android) is much more, for lack of a better word, intimate than anything that existed in the old days; it's just about impossible (and maybe meaningless) to tell where one ends and the other begins. In fact, one of the biggest problems I had with this book (or this learning process) was trying to distinguish between that which is Java and that which is Android so that I could then master them individually.

Put another way, I just about finished turning my brain into mush by trying to figure out how Java worked while at the same time trying to figure out how Android worked while at the same time trying to figure out how the two worked together. (Not to mention trying to figure out stuff like XML, Gradle, API levels, AVDs, packages, and the rest of the Android liturgy.)

So I put this book aside and bought Mr. Burd's "Java for Dummies". The clouds parted. Java, when dealt with more or less by itself, wasn't as foreign as I thought. Still different, but at least possible to understand. The big change in the learning environment was not having to figure out, for example, Android event handling (setOnClickListener blah blah blah) while trying to grasp of the fundamentals of Java. Then I came back to this book ("Android Application Development") and behold, things started to make sense.

Thus my recommendation: tackle Java by itself, using a book focused on Java, then deal with Android app development (using a book like this one). If you buy that approach, then you will understand why my only real criticism of this book is that Mr. Burd attempts the impossible when he attempts to teach Java and Android at the same time. That makes Mr. Burd's task really difficult (the impossible frequently is), particularly in the early parts of this book, and it deals out an unnecessarily difficult learning problem (at least for a dinosaur). Having said that, I enjoy Mr. Burd's style of writing and teaching, and I like the result I'm getting from using his books (now that I've figured out how to use them).

Not for Dummies

I'm just delving into this book, but so far I've found it very helpful. I've read and studied from a myriad of software books for classroom and my own education. I wanted to take an Android class this fall, but could not afford it. So, after reading the reviews I purchased Android Application Development All-in-One for Dummies.

Let's just say this about the Dummies aspect of this book - it's not for people who have no clue about how software works or how applications are developed. Indeed, I stumbled right out of the gate with the emulator setup. If anyone else is having this problem, let me point you away from Barry's recommendation of maybe needing to use an emulator and tell you emphatically you will need an emulator. BlueStacks works great. Just start BlueStacks before you start Android studio and it will be likely in your emulator list when you go to run the app.

Barry Burd walks a fine line between information overload and showing you how to get started. I'm really impressed with all the useful information. As a linear thinker I am working each step as I go along so I can understand everything about the big, bold world of app development and how apps work in the Android environment.

Edited to add that Bluestacks emulator works great for creating the beginner apps not targeted for specific devices. I'm sure as I get deeper into the book I will take Barry Burd's advice and install a more robust emulator, such as the one he recommended, Genymotion.

Absolutely, a Great book!

A great and surprisingly fun book. I've read a lot of Android development books over the years and this is a real gem in my opinion. Burd not only takes the time to walk the reader through some complex topics that other books either gloss over or ignore, but he makes the journey enjoyable and understandable.

He covers Java and all the Android basics of activities and life cycles, fragments, layouts, views, receivers, etc., and has one of the most complete descriptions of intent matching I've seen.

Unfortunately there are many average to poor Android books out there and a real beginner won't be able to learn much from them. This book is different though, and clearly superior to many, or even most, because the information is complete, useful, and as I mentioned, it's fun. Definitely recommended.

Note: another reviewer said that this book was not for "dummies", and he/she is right. These books are accessible to most, but Android development is a little strange when you begin (IMO), the OS and IDE (android studio) changes every few months or so, and having some object oriented development knowledge/skills would help anyone attempting it. Knowing Java is not an imperative, but would be helpful as it eases the burden of figuring out what's Android and what's Java when you're reviewing code.

A very good book for a very good language

I had access to an early version of this book, and it stays true to the spirit of the language: simple, but saying everything there is to say nevertheless.

Being one of the early speakers of Toki Pona, I usually assert that I learned Esperanto in a month, and Toki Pona in a day. It's that small. However, I usually add that it took a year before I really spoke it in real life. I can wholeheartedly recommend giving this little language a try, just because. And you can do worse that to learn it with the book by the author of the language.

For people who already learned Toki Pona, yes, it's still worth it to buy this book. We really need to get some people up to steam in signed Toki Pona, and the hieroglyph system Sonja worked out is quite cool and consistent.

Totally complete!

Sonja's writing is fun, there are lots of cute surprises and jokes. Her lessons are short, easy and approachable to grammarphobes. After the lessons, you get a lot of nice source material to read and improve with--reading Toki Pona is usually harder than writing it, so it's good practice. The book is fine- has the rules you need. Yeah, you could get them online but that isn't too helpful if you have an open book, closed computer exam. Has a nice confidentiality chart too. Btw, for the MPRE, just listen to the Barbri video over and over, do a ton of free MC on Barbri and Kaplan, and do 3 or 4 of the sample exams in their free books and you'll pass easily.

This book has all of the Professional Responsibility Standards, Rules, and Statutes you might need. The Model Rules and their comments are in the front, and state rules that differ follow. The sections are easy enough to flip through and are arranged well enough, though the comment font size might be a little small for quick scanning.

I could see this being a very useful guide to have around the office, and not just for law students in class or studying for the MPRE.

About the Author
Chet Hosmer is the Founder of Python Forensics, Inc. a non-profit organization focused on the collaborative development of open-source investigative technologies using the Python programming language. Chet serves as a visiting professor at Utica College in the Cybersecurity Graduate program where his research and teaching focus on advanced steganography/data hiding methods and related defenses. He is also an Adjunct Faculty member at Champlain College in the Masters of Science in Digital Forensic Science Program where he is researching and working with graduate students to advance the application Python to solve hard problems facing digital investigators.

Chet makes numerous appearances each year to discuss emerging cyber threats including National Public Radio's Kojo Nnamdi show, ABC's Primetime Thursday, NHK Japan and ABC News Australia. He is also a frequent contributor to technical and news stories relating to cyber security and forensics and has been interviewed and quoted by IEEE, The New York Times, The Washington Post, Government Computer News, Salon.com, DFI News and Wired Magazine.
