Kelby versus Kelby

It's not often that the author of a technical photography book competes with himself. But that's what Scott Kelby may appear to be doing, since he's already written a Lightroom book for another publisher.
This book is a tip book that lists questions one might have while working in Lightroom, like, how do I change the background color of a photobook? The book is organized into broad chapters like "How to Use the Brushes" and "How to Create Special Effects" (although some Lightroom users might not consider creating an HDR image a special effect). In case you are not sure which chapter to look in there is a good index. The book is fairly thorough and covers most (but not all) of the problems a user might encounter.
I usually don't like tip books, but this one appears better than most, since a good number of the problems one might encounter are listed. One could almost learn to use Lightroom using this book, but I've found that tutorial books, like Kelby's other Lightroom book, with practical exercises on downloaded files are better as a pedagogical matter. Instead this seems to me the kind of book you keep near the computer for those times when you forget how to do something. (Of course, if your tutorial book has a good index, that should do the job as well).
I also found that some of the author's explanations were a little skimpy. For example he suggested that if one didn't want to manually search the list of keywords to find the one you are looking for, one could use the Library filter bar. I find it much easier to use the Keyword List Panel entry bar.
I was a bit shocked at Kelby's disdain for the Slideshow function of Lightroom. Of course, if one wants to do a full-court press on a slideshow, one can use one of the many dedicated pieces of software. But I've found that even for polished slideshows the Slideshow function is good enough, integrates nicely with the rest of Lightroom, and doesn't require laying out more bucks. Inclusion in Lightroom is a real bargain, even if it doesn't do all the big boys do.
I'm cribbing from something Kelby once said when I say this is a good Lightroom second book, when you've already learned how to use Lightroom.

A great read and reference book for Lightroom.

This is a great go to book when you are working in Lightroom and need a quick example on how to accomplish a task. Scott said that the book should be used as a reference book and that you should not read it from start to finish. I am enjoying reading the book cover to cover. It is fun to try some new techniques out along the way. I have come across some tricks that I definitely will be using in Lightroom from now on. Thanks for another great book Scott.

God of small things…the book on treasures of LR

Like every book on photography written by Scott, this one is a joy to read. As a freelance photographer, I am amazed how he is always able to make sense of something complicated in the simplest of ways. And more importantly……..there's always a wow factor at the end of every chapter…I was surprised as how many new things I learnt in the last hour reading this book. I would suggest this for anyone who owns LR…and even if you think you know it well….you will still learn something new.
