Good, but need to know the language
By Book Junkie
I am a book formatter and know the trade, but stumbled upon this and decided to see what the author had to say. The book is decent and the author covers many of the basic formatting errors that many self-published authors miss, or know nothing about.
The only problem with this book is that it is written in formatter-speak. Honestly, if you are a newbie author and have never tried formatting, you will be confused in reading this book. Even I was a little confused. Consider this passage:
“Missing headings or subheadings that should have been included. Review only the levels of subheadings or headings that are consistently listed in the contents when determining if same levels headings or subheadings were unintentionally omitted. For example, if you see that, besides the chapter headings, only Level 1 and Level 2 subheadings are listed, then be sure that no Level 1 and Level 2 subheadings are missing from the contents listing.”
This just reads like a lot of double-speak, or as though someone got their hands on a thesaurus. A more concise way to write this would be, if you are going to list the chapter subheadings in the contents listing for one chapter, be sure to do it for all of the chapters.
The author mentions that the first paragraph following a chapter heading or subheading should not be indented. This is actually wrong. Some publishers will have the first line indent, others will not. Whichever you choose, make sure you are consistent. However, and the author forgot to mention this, if you are using a drop cap for the first paragraphs following the chapter heading, it is never indented.
The book covers some good points, though it gets a little repetitive, and a lot of basic stuff that self-publishers always get wrong. I just think the book would be easier to understand if the author would write it in layman’s terms, not formatter-speak. Also, pictures would be nice. They can better illustrate what she is referring to.

As an author and layout editor myself, Ms. Smith's book is an eye-opener as to the detailed proofreading that needs to be done to make a book, pamphlet, or article appear professional. Anyone who needs to produce the printed word should get this book and read it carefully to find ways to improve their final product(s). A gem. Highly recommend it.
