A relative improvement -- but far weaker than what it should be
By A. J. Sutter
Some important statistics about this book: the P-to-E section of this dictionary runs to 674 double-columned pages, while the E-to-P section is 40% bigger, at around 942. My unabridged monolingual Michaelis dictionary (Brazilian) runs to over 2000 triple-columned pages a few centimetres taller and a kilo or two heavier than the present volume, so this imbalance certainly isn't because there's any shortage of vocabulary or denotations in Portuguese. And although it has fewer entries overall, the Collins Concise dictionary manages to keep the discrepancy between the two sections within less than 10%. While it's certainly larger than other P/E dictionaries currently in print, and contains both Brazilian and European usage, it seems to be a dictionary better-suited for translating from English to Portuguese rather than the other way around. Multinationals looking to adapt their instruction manuals when selling into Brazil and other Lusophone markets might be well-served by this tilt.

But even gung-ho globalists who are used to the performance standard set by, say, the the unabridged Collins French/English or German/English dictionaries — which are comparably priced — will be very disappointed with this work. For example, if you translate business writing from English into Portuguese, you won't find basic terms like 'tender offer,' 'leveraged buy-out,' 'put' (the right to demand that a counterparty buy an asset from you), or 'call' (the right to demand that a counterparty sell an asset to you). All of these are in the Collinses I mentioned, together with much more.

Conversely, if you’re mainly interested in reading contemporary Brazilian literature and song lyrics, as I am (along with law and social science), you're also going to have some frustrations with this book. In the P/E section there are a few text boxes here and there that explain some of the names of political parties, a few popular music styles, etc. But despite these, you’d never know that “balançar” connotes dancing, and the book definitely ain’t got that “suinge.” The ubiquitous colloquial adjective “legal” is defined with an affectless “good” (it’s more like “terrific!”) If you prefer your beer cold, you’d never know that in Brazil you ask for “um chope estupidamente gelado”(or be able to figure out what that is if offered one). If you read a headline about a “Tuiuiú na Copa” you’d never know be able to find out that the first word denotes a large bird native to the Pantanal region, much less that it’s also the nickname for a person from that region (who in this case is playing in the World Cup). The E/P section does include some familiar four-letter words and other obscenities, but the translations aren’t symmetrical, e.g., an F-word expression gets turned into an S-word expression when you back-translate the Brazilian equivalent; and I was puzzled by the translations of some other common obscenities and non-vulgar pejoratives. (Here I mean some words that Oxford doesn’t blink at but that send Amazon’s automated Brain Police into conniptions even when some letters replaced by asterisks -- honi soit qui mal y pense, Amazon! -- so I can’t identify them here.) Even if you are simply reading the very polite Brazilian constitution and run across the term “Distrito Federal,” you’ll need to look elsewhere to find out that this is the area around Brasília — whereas “District of Columbia” and many similar proper nouns are in the E/P section. And while you'll be able to find the translation for "Azerbaijão" (surprise: it's "Azerbaijan"), "Iemanjá" and other important Brazilian cultural references are missing.

To my annoyance, I found better translations of several terms mentioned here in either my Collins or my Larousse paperback concise dictionaries -- which means I can't free up shelf space by packing them away. And if you have the aging but indispensable Chamberlain & Harmon "Dictionary of Informal Brazilian Portuguese" (1983), don't even think of setting it aside.

So the best I can say is that if some dire circumstance constrains you to have only one Portuguese-English dictionary, this book is certainly better than a concise dictionary, and much better than any made-in-Brazil bilingual dictionaries I’m aware of. But that's something of a contrived compliment, since for all but the most conventional work you're going to need other dictionaries to supplement this one. Anglophones still have a wait, it seems, for Portuguese to be on a par with other Western languages when it comes to resources for translators and the culturally curious.

Portuguese dictionary is very disappointing.
By Amazon Customer
I have purchased Oxford dictionaries of this size for French, Italian, German and Spanish, and have been relatively satisfied with the quality and usefulness of all of these. I was anxiously looking forward to the Oxford Portuguese Dictionary recently presented, but I must say I have been very disappointed. I am very interested in Modernista literature, and while I have a decent knowledge of vocabulary, when I come across a word I am unfamiliar with in the literature, more often than not, the word is not in this dictionary. Even worse, there is no phonetic transcription in the Portuguese half of the dictionary. While for the most part pronunciation is more easily recoverable from the orthography than in many languages, it is not always so easy. Open and closed and and the pronunciation of are important distinctions in the language, and among other problems of spelling and pronunciation of foreign words present problems for non-native speakers. The Italian dictionary provides pronunciation for words whose pronunciation is generally predictable, and the Spanish gives pronunciation for those words that are unpredictable in pronunciation. I have been happy with the updating of vocabulary and admission of new vocabulary and new meanings for older words, in respect to pronunciation problems I feel this dictionary is lacking. I expected more, and I am very disappointed.

Loved it!

Excellent dictionary, strongly recommended!
Well organized and probably the most complete we can find for a Portuguese-English dictionary. It's a must-have for teachers, learners and translators who works with these languages!
