About the Author
Charles F. Bryan, Jr. is an American historian who spent most of his career in the museum field, including twenty years as president of the Virginia Historical Society. He began writing essays for the Richmond Ties-Dispatch in the 1990's that have reached a large and enthusiastic readership. He lives with his wife in Richmond, Virginia.

Awesome History

Charles Bryan has captured American history at the best and worse of times. This book is a look at the past that many of us may have forgotten. He writes of war, (Civil War, World War I and II), along with views of life before air-conditioning and Civil Rights.
Mr. Bryan's memories of growing up in the South and listening to the stories his grandfather and mother, great storytellers in their own right, told him while sitting on the porch of his pre-Civil War home brings the reader back in time. His writing about how he become a lover of history should be read by all Americans. He also has lists in this book that challenges us to write our own.
If you love history and great stories then this is the book for you.

Fascinating book for history lovers

After hearing Dr. Bryan speak at the Virginal Historical Society where he served as President for 20 years, I bought his book and spent the weekend reading it. He is a well-respected historian who brings history and its relationship to our current lives in sharp focus in his thought provoking and enjoyable essays on numerous topics. At a time when history has often been kidnapped by various interest groups, he gives the facts not interpretations. A must read for all history lovers and anyone seeking an unbiased review of the events. Also enjoyable are his stories of growing up in the 50's and 60's, told with humor and loving memories. I loved this book and highly recommend it. Ellen Boynton
