Excellent for beginners

I've recently begun fulfilling a forty-plus-year dream of learning to play the fiddle, and bought a couple of DVDs to support this wish.

The first DVD lesson was nice, but the presenter/instructor seemed disorganized, flowing sort of "stream of consciousness...sort of "oh, and another thing...". The second was more organized, but featured the DULLEST person in the world talking to the camera as if his views already understood music theory, relying heavily on tablature, which is accompanies the DVD but is deuce difficult to hold while bowing. I also got an "old-time fiddle" instructional DVD which is nice, quirky, and simplified, but not satisfying by itself, and not useful without a good instructional DVD as a basis.

...then, I bought Mr. Wicklund's DVD.

Mr. Wicklund takes the viewer through the BASICS, from holding the instrument (get ready to tone a few unused muscles), hold and use the bow, tuning (so you don't break a string), how to stop strings for scales, all the stuff covered in the other DVDs I've seen...but, in a friendly, inviting, organized and easy to understand way. Not trying to sound dramatic, his DVD makes the learning of what can be an unforgiving instrument seem actually POSSIBLE.

He then goes slowly through 22 songs, one or two strings at first and then progressively more difficult. He uses the songs to help the student work on and groove in points and skills he's covered. Then he stops, adds a skill (high and low positions of the second and third fingers, for instance, or drones), and then gives you more songs to practice.

Each song is presented with a video window showing his fingering, then it's broken up and covered slowly, and then he'll stop and give you pointers on the song.

Finally, he shows you how to play backup, as in bluegrass music, bowing chords to back up someone's solo. This part seems to require the book and a bit more detail than is given in the DVD, but the book's readily available and cheap, too, and I'd recommend getting it (I have yet to).

The lessons are graduated and the DVD is conveniently broken up into chapters, making it easier to use for the casual or busy student as well as the rosin-addict. You can spend a week on one skill, going back to your week's (or month's) chapter, and see that progress can be made.

Finally, it's 2 hrs long, TWICE AS LONG as almost everyone else's DVDs.

I can readily believe, as Mr. Wicklund says on the DVD, that his students take 4-8 months to cover the material covered in the DVD. For a brick-head and ham-hand like me, it looks like it'll take longer, and yet this DVD leads me to believe that even I can do it.

Mr. Wicklund has two books out, but only this DVD so far. I look forward to his producing another. I may be ready for it when it comes out. In the meantime, I'm hot to buy his books and get on with it.

I say with no exaggeration that Mr. Wicklund's treatment of what might be a humbling subject -- learning through some of the most spine-shattering off-notes only the dog could hear (you wish), and controlling that bloody bow -- seem a perfectly achievable goal.

This is a great companion to the book and CD. When the kids and I disagree about technique, it is great to have this DVD to turn to and solve the problem. Very well done and easy to use and understand.

Fantastic help for the bluegrass fiddler

I have learned more from this one DVD than from any other source. Brian Wicklund is a marvelous teacher with a very clear style easily understood by young and old alike. Each time I watch it, I pick up new insights to improve my personal fiddling technique. I really would recommend this DVD to other aspiring fiddlers.

Simple, easy and full of humor

Dog after dog appear in this easy reader that is reminiscent of the classic Go, Dog. Go! The very simple text shows opposites. There are hot dogs and cold dogs. Wet dogs and dry dogs. Dirty dogs and clean dogs. Each shown with a simple illustration that will help new readers decode the words. Throughout the book, a particularly long dog appears again and again, adding a touch of whimsy and humor. This is a simple yet very engaging beginning reader with tons of appeal.

Seltzer uses very simple sentences throughout his book, appealing directly to new readers. The use of opposites also helps with new readers figuring out the words as well as the repeating simple sentence structure. The illustrations have a winning cartoon style that is simple as well. Each sentence is clearly matching to a corresponding image aiding in new reader skills. The added touches of humor throughout make for a book that is fun to read as well.

A nice pick for beginning reader collections, this is simple, easy and full of humor. Appropriate for ages 4-6.

With the growing importance of migration in today’s globalized world, this first International Handbook on the Economics of Migration is, without doubt, an extremely timely and needed contribution. The Handbook covers a comprehensive list of topics, including, importantly, most recent and innovative topics on the economics of migration and ethnicity. The authors go much far beyond the standard effects of immigration on wages and employment or welfare of natives, and analyze questions that are at the frontier of migration economics.
The editors, Prof. Klaus F. Zimmermann and Prof. Amelie F. Constant, are renowned experts in the field of the economics of migration. Klaus F. Zimmermann is Professor of Economics at Bonn University and Director of the Institute for the Study of Labor (IZA, Bonn). He is the author or editor of fifty books and has published numerous book chapters and research articles in labor and population economics, mostly on migration topics. He actively participates in policy debates and is a frequent contributor to the media on many urgent labor- and migration-related questions. Amelie F. Constant is the Program Director of Migration at IZA, Bonn and a Visiting Professor at the George Washington University and Temple University in the US. She is a co-editor of several books and journal volumes and has written over fifty refereed articles and book chapters in labor economics, particularly concerning the economics of migration and ethnicity.
The Handbook is structured in five logical parts, which include the reasons and types of migration, the economic consequences of migration, additional novel arguments for migration research and implications for policy. The variety of topics covered within each of these parts is impressive. After presenting ethnicity and its economic dimensions in the Introduction, the book starts with models of individual migration decisions, extended to circular migration and specific types of migration (health professionals, child labor migrants, human smuggling). It subsequently proceeds with the labor market performance of migrants, ranging from migrant education mismatch and its implications for the labor market outcomes of immigrants, to immigrant occupational choice, migrant entrepreneurs and risky occupations, considers ethnic hiring patterns and barriers to it (such as discrimination, spatial mismatch and networks), and analyzes the relationship between immigrant wages and obesity. A case-study of the recent migration after the eastern enlargement of the European Union is also presented. The Handbook then discusses novel and less commonly analyzed aspects of the economics of migration and ethnicity, such as ethnic and national identities, religiosity, interethnic marriages, the relationships between natural disasters and migration, happiness and migration, immigration and crime, as well as immigrants’ use of time and the impacts on migrants’ spouses, children and parents left behind in the countries of origin. In a final part, the Handbook presents policy-related issues and concludes with the economic evaluation of immigration policies.

It has a weird ending to it. The author is talking about the nose and eyes and all of a sudden he tells the baby to finish his milk. It does not rhyme. But, overall decent book. It should have been a hard cover book for the younger babies.
