About the Author
Peter Fauland is a professional photographer and teacher who leads workshops around the world for photography enthusiasts as well as for corporate clients. Originally from the school of classic black-and-white landscape film photography, Fauland now practices portrait, event, and architectural photography. While living in Switzerland and France for several years, he documented the construction of a complex detector system at CERN/the European Organization for Nuclear Research (Geneva) and he constructed a special hybrid camera consisting of a large-format camera system with a DSLR as the sensor. Fauland currently lives and works in Berlin, Germany. He believes the new generation of system cameras, such as those in the Fujifilm X-series, has “brought the work of photography back to something intimate and direct.” He adds, “If I could work with only one camera, it would be from the X100 family.”

Not enough detail to be of much value

"Mastering the Fujifilm X100T and X100S" by Peter Foulard is a relatively slim volume that tries to explain various aspects of Fuji's great X100S/T cameras, but doesn’t delve very deeply into the features and uses of the cameras and in the end is not a very satisfying book. It rates only 2-2.5 out of 5 stars.

Fauland does explain a few issues such as Dynamic Range in reasonable detail, including examples of what types of images are best suited for the various settings. But more often, he only briefly touches on an issue before moving on to the next one, frequently leaving more questions than answers. For example, the section of flash photography touches on many concepts such as built-in flash, external flash, 3rd party units, Commander Mode, Slo-Synchro, and TTL preflashes, but doesn’t go much further than brief mentions, and certainly doesn’t have enough information to help a photographer “master” flash photography with the X100 series. Even when a subject is more fully explained, there are frustrating omissions; for example, the discussion of street photography doesn’t even bring up the zone-focus technique used by a number of street photographers (and a technique for which the X100 series is well-suited). Some topics aren’t discussed or even mentioned, such as creating panoramas, creating multiple exposures, using exposure lock, and using video on the X100S.

The text is well written with a style that isn’t too technical and makes for a comfortable read. The book contains a modest number of good or excellent images, but only a few of them contain detailed information on the shooting conditions that generated them. Some images are quite poor, such as the virtually colorless image of a field and trees that is used repeatedly to demonstrate film simulations, dynamic range, and settings for shadows and highlights. The choice of this image is surprising, as it does little to demonstrate any of those concepts.

This book is not for the novice photographer—it assumes the reader is well-versed in basic photography concepts such as shutter speed, aperture, depth-of-field and ISO. It also has minimal guidance on setting up the camera, using focus modes, or composing images. But while it isn’t for novices, it isn’t really for advanced or professional photographers either, as few topics are given enough attention to educate the experienced users beyond what they would already have gathered from reading the camera manual or even just exploring the camera’s menus.

Anyone looking to get a deeper understanding of the X100S should look to one of the other books available. See my reviews of Fujifilm X100S: From Snapshots to Great Shots, The Complete Guide to Fujifilm's X100s Camera (B&w Edition), and Photographer's Guide to the Fujifilm X100S: Getting the Most from Fujifilm's Advanced Digital Camera. Given the lack of books specifically written for the X100T, getting one of the above books for the X100S and/or reading the many online resources and blog posts on the X100T would be much more productive use of time and money.

Update: A Short Course In The Classic Art of FujiFilm X100T Photography by Dennis P Curtin is a guide for the Fuji X100T, but anyone other than beginning photographers would probably not find much value in it. See my review for more details.

An Unsuccessful Effort

You would expect guidance in making the menu choices that properly set up your camera. No, that's not included. You would hope for help in figuring out flash compensation. The two pages devoted to flash don't even mention that. Instead there is a discussion of external flash offered by other companies. In short, this book fails to provide the product specific information that you want in a manual. It has helpful suggestions on digital photography, but even those are marred by the poor quality of the printing of examples. Those examples show a muddy frame in which half the picture, the foreground, is virtually black and without detail. The examples are not well chosen at all and fail to illustrate the point that the author intended. I have been using the camera for about 10 months and waited patiently for a guide book to come along. I found this disappointing. I would return it if I could.

Not Quite "Mastering" the X100T/S

I'd have to agree with the first review left for this book. In every section I was left wanting more detail. He should call this "Interpreting the User Manual of the Fuji X100T/S". This is all he is really doing. Going through all the features in the manual and elaborating on them with a bit of his own commentary. This book would be perfect for someone who is somewhat new to digital cameras and photography, but hardly "Mastering" the X100T.

I'll give him 3 stars due to the Scenarios section being useful, and including instruction on using the iPhone app to control and share pictures (as I don't think there is a manual for this app anywhere that I am aware of). Don't get me wrong, I DID learn some things that I didn't already know, and the book is well presented and written, it just doesn't live up to its title.

I’ve recently been trying to learn Italian language because I’m planning on travelling there next month and want to know about their language and that’s why I purchased this book. This is my second book on this topic and this one is comparatively better than before. This book teaches most useful and common words and phrases which was very helpful to me. It is easy to learn and anyone can apply these lessons into any Italian conversation. This book is well written and very effective at the time of travelling. An excellent guide to learn basic Italian in no time. Everything is explained very well, in a concise and practical manner. Also, there are so many examples and practical exercises. This is a great starting point for learning Italian. The alphabet and the pronunciation sections are pretty through and gives you a great opportunity to understand how to pronounce certain words. The rest of the book is very basic, covering noun rules, articles, and common expressions. Use this as a supplement to your other language resources.

Now, you can take advantage of her wisdom through a comprehensive new 180-page instructional manual called Holly's Ukulele Method. The acclaimed master uke instructor has put together a well-organized, easily digestible system that is intended to teach players more than simple chords and melodies. The book kicks off with a 12-step jump start guide that includes info about uke anatomy and setup, proper playing position, basic strumming and fretting techniques, tuning tips, and more. The six lessons that follow cover everything from reading music notation and tablature to complex chord-melody soloing to advanced fingerpicking, and there are loads of songs and exercises to help you along the way. About the Author

A veteran music instructor, Holly Rudin-Braschi is the author of, Holly’s Ukulele Method™. Known for the enthusiasm, sense of humor and positive energy that she brings to her teaching, Holly has taken the mystery out of reading music for hundreds of students that she has taught privately and through group lessons at Santa Rosa Junior College, Petaluma School of Music, her home studio and, master classes at venues like the Lark in the Morning Music Camp in Mendocino, CA.

Music Education: She holds a B.A. in musicology and languages from Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York and a Master of Music from the Manhattan School of Music in New York City.

Holly began her music studies with guitar at age seven and voice at age thirteen. Early in her career, Holly received scholarships for three consecutive years at the Tanglewood Festival of the Arts in Lenox, MA where she studied with celebrated soprano Phyllis Curtin and sang in the Tanglewood Festival Chorus under the baton of Seigi Ozawa, Michael Tilson Thomas, Leonard Bernstein, and many other renowned conductors. Other scholarships include study with Tito Gobbi (a contemporary of Maria Callas) in Florence, Italy, and apprenticeships at the Colorado Opera Festival, in Colorado Springs, CO and the Banff Festival of the Arts in Banff, Canada. She also holds a German certification from Middlebury College in Vermont and speaks Italian, French, as well as basic Norwegian and Greek.

Holly makes it EASY!

Fabulous! Exactly what I needed to be inspired to learn this little, happy-sounding instrument. As a piano teacher I've wanted to pick up another instrument I could eventually teach, and this book is perfect for that goal. I've seen lots of uke books over the years, but this one is the most comprehensive, with full audio (downloadable) for each example or song, and fun factoids and history scattered throughout.

THE BEST UKULELE INSTRUCTION BOOK

As a long-term amateur ukulele player I am always looking for quality instruction books. This one is by far the best I have come across. it is quite versatile in that it is easily understood both by beginners and by those, like me, who have struggled for years in trying to perfect a personal style of playing the ukulele. Holly seems to have a good sense of what works at any level of playing this instrument. I recommend this book.

New and familiar apps

The author uses apps to increase his productivity. He shares the ones he uses with how he uses them. There are several I was already familiar with, as well as some that were new to me.

He also shares various tips not related to apps that will help you increase your productivity. My favorite is to just let it go when you get stuck trying to solve a problem. I know I have wasted many an hour on a problem to come up with the solution only after I'd walked away for a while!

I would recommend this book to anyone looking for ways to use mobile and computer applications to increase your productivity and free up more time to focus on doing the things you enjoy.

I am a notorious procrastinator, and postponing things is my forte. A lot of the tips and tricks in this book are based on online collaboration and/or using online services to organise yourself. Due to policies at my workplace, I cannot use many of these in my professional life, but I've already seen benefits for my home projects and personal life. I think benefit number one is actually getting my act together and finally starting my home project in the first place...! Todoist is indeed awesome and I have no idea why I did not try it before.

Recommended for all other procrastinators that also like to use apps and tech stuff!

Excellent book on time management and productivity

Easy and entertaining read with lots of useful hints and tips about apps and techniques to get more work done in the time I have available. I especially like how the author is platform agnostic since I use both mac and pc.
