this will likely be a useful and motivating read if you are quite new to ...

[NOTE: I received a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.]

3.5 stars. Short and to the point, although on a basic level: in other words, this will likely be a useful and motivating read if you are quite new to writing and/or looking for motivation, but will not bring anything new to someone who's already studied several books about writing in general.

I think the author liked putting up this guide together, and you can feel it, as she puts the finger on exactly what one should take into account when writing a novel. Battling procrastination, finding a writing software (links are provided), not letting anyone kill your desire to write, how to start looking for ideas, the "hero's journey", planning or not planning, writing environment, self-publishing, advice about adverbs and active/passive voice, etc... A lot of aspects are covered, along with examples from the author's own stories, thus allowing to actually see how her thought processes went and how she got from her initial ideas to the finished novels.

(Side note: the author mentions the Scrivener sofwatre, as well as NaNoWriMo, a yearly "event" that has personally motivated me a lot in years past. For anyone who'd like to take part in November, "winning" (completing 50k words) entitles you to a 50% discount to buy Scrivener. It's a great software, and the discount makes it dirt cheap.)

As said above, while it's probably nothing new to someone with experience in that regard, this book's main interesting feature, in my opinion, is that it covers a lot of essential things to keep in mind. Someone with very little knowledge can easily start from any chapter, motivate themselves, then expand and look for more resources later, using this basis to delve deeper—either using the links provided by the author, or researching on other websites and in other books. As for more experienced writers, since it's a short read, it can still be useful if you're finding yourself into a writing slump and are looking for a nice reminder about how to get back to work.

A more developed version would definitely be a good addition. As it is now, I'd say 3*stars for me, but 4* for someone who hasn't started writing yet and needs to find a good place to start.

Great for those seeking inspiration to write.
By Martyn Stanley
First of all, a disclaimer. I received a free copy of this ebook in exchange for an honest review.

Maggie isn't the first person to write a book advising on novel writing. I'm sure she won't be the last. The first think I do when I check one of these titles out is to check the credentials of the author. Maggie scores in this area because at the time of writing this review she is receiving consistently good reviews on both Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk for her works of fiction. I haven't paid her nutrition books any attention. This isn't about self-help writing, it's about fiction - and that's what I'm interested in.

For me personally there was a lot of fluff towards the start of this book, but to be fair and objective what I considered 'fluff' might not be fluff for everyone. This title is written for the person who wants to write a novel, or has wanted to - but never got started. Her advice to people who have the aspiration, but not the inspiration is probably good advice. I faced some of the problems she describes when I started out. I maybe resolved them differently, mainly by being a pig-headed, selfish, single-minded person who if he decides to do something - does it irrespective of other people's feelings. That's perhaps a character flaw that can have it's uses.

The book is well-written and easy reading. I like the style in inserting examples here and there and disguising examples of writing as questions posed by potential authors - it works and it makes it a light, easy, read - as opposed to a textbook.

The strength of this title is really the later chapters for me. I use word and google documents to write and they are flawed. Having read Maggie's views on scrivener I may check it out. It certainly sounds useful. Her advice on prose, narrative, the passive voice, adverbs and dialogue is all good too. It's a chapter I'd book mark and re-read. I do use pro-writing aid myself and I have used autocrit. These are best used as learning tools and I'd still suggest an getting an editor and proof-reader.

An aspect of this book which I didn't like was Maggie's insistence on novels being 80,000 words plus adn being X chapters of X words. I write without rules. If I want to write a 500 word chapter to emphasize a short scene, I will. If my story is told and has come to satisfactory conclusion at 60,000 words, then that's a novel. If it needs another 30,000 words then it will be a 90,000 word novel.

She does list some useful resources too.

I'm currently in the process of desperately trying to finish my fourth Deathsworn Arc novel: 'Deathsworn Arc 4: Rise of the Archmage' and I will by trying to make some use of the advice Maggie gives here. I don't agree with her on planning. I'm neither a planner nor a pantser. I have a framework in my head and know what has to happen, but I pants to fill in the gaps. However my writing is driven by characters. Once I know who they and what sort of people they are, it's a matter of writing challenges for them. I have little control over how they will react though - because I have to stay true to them. They have to behave and think consistently, but also to develop and grow - particularly as their relationships with their companions change.

I'd definitely suggest this for someone who wants to write, but doesn't. It's well written, a good source of information and should help give you inspiration. Seasoned authors might find tidbits in here, but may find they already know most of what Maggie is trying to teach.

Informative and Encouraging!
By Amanda H Gillespie
“I received a copy of this book from the author and Booklover Catlady Publicity in return for a fair and honest review, many thanks”

I have been struggling with the idea of writing a novel for a while. My husband is more than supportive. He pushes against my fears of failure. Maggie James addresses these fears head on and gives you a plan of action. She deals with procrastination and writer’s block. Not only does she advise you, she backs it up with links of sites she uses. She gives wonderful examples from others and even does a refresher of strong writing techniques. I feel much more confident and excited to start on this journey!
