Not totally sophomoric gibberish

I have been reading this book in fits and starts over the past month, trying to decide if it's good or bad. I am 63-years-old and still writing code. The grumpy old man in me can't believe that anyone wrote a book about software metrics without a bibliography or acknowledging the seminal work in the field by Grady and Caswell (Software Metrics: Establishing a Company-Wide Program) and Boehm (Software Engineering Economics). But this is a good book, even if it appears to be written by someone with no knowledge of the field before Extreme Programming came along.

The book starts out by acknowledging that a common principle of Agile development is “Only measure what matters” but then dismisses that idea by calling it a “bad tenet” because “How do you know what matters? When do you start tracking new things and when do you stop tracking others? Because these are hard questions, metrics end up getting thrown by the wayside when they could be providing value. A better wording would be measure everything and figure out why metrics change unexpectedly.’” I read this and thought “get off my lawn! How can anyone write a book about metrics and not tell us how to measure what matters?” But sure enough, most of the rest of the text addresses the fundamental issue of figuring out what matters, and to whom.

The author relies on an analysis tool called “mind mapping” which is new to me. From what I can gather about this technique (from googling it) I can imagine he conceived of a book about Agile Software Metrics and then broke it down into component parts. The book is well-organized, sometimes to a fault: each chapter starts with an outline of what he is going to say, then he says it, and then he closes the chapter by summarizing what he said. Sometimes this is really good, like when you been reading the book in stolen moments at work and at home (as I did, mostly), but other times it gets a bit tedious and I found myself thinking “could we possibly just get to the point?”

The final chapter is the best, talking about Agile principles in general and getting into some specific metrics that can be useful and are measurable. A lot of the book leading up to final chapter is more descriptive of the different stages of Agile development, what tools are available at each stage to collect metrics, and how different people in the organization have different questions they want answered by metrics. I found the discussion of Continuous Development to be really interesting – it actually got me to recall an article I read 31 years ago in Scientific American (September 1984) by Alan Kay about the software and where it might be heading in the future, back then.

How to figure out what matters and then measure it to help your team work as productively as possible in an Agile world

The Agile methodology (or approach) to software development is still relatively new. The promise of Agile, when it is not used as an elaborate cover for the old no-process no-planning no-accountability way software was developed in the Very Bad Old Days, is that customers can be made happy with continuous delivery of software that gets ever closer to what they want - usable software that works without bugs and without security risks.

So how do you find out whether your Agile team is producing as well as it can? What do you measure? How do you measure it? In the new world of development and build and tracking tools, almost everything can be instrumented to provide data. So how do you fulfill the Agile goal of measuring only what matters? How do you figure out what matters? Davis has provided lots of measurement tools with examples of the metrics produced AND several case studies that show how to implement his ideas AND guidance on how to discover what matters in your situation by measuring various things. Finally, there is guidance on how to match metrics to the Agile principles and how to use the metrics to improve your team and processes - and products, which is what your customers care about. And then there is an appendix with full and explicit info on constructing a metrics system using commonly available tools.

This is a highly technical book; you have to understand the jargon and know modern software engineering and build processes to understand it and benefit from it There is no list of acronyms and no glossary of concepts, so you really have to know the field. The index is spotty and inconsistent, a minor irritant. None of this ultimately matters if you're part of the intended audience of this book - Agile teams and their first-level supervisors and leads.

Cogent, Well-Written Book on the Rich Field of Agile Development

This is straightforward and practical guide on Agile Metrics aimed primarily at software teams already familiar with agile principles and working in accordance with these methodologies. Written by a software engineer experienced in leading such teams, this book explains the role of agile metrics in this process and goes on at length to discuss what and which kinds of data should be collected and how. It then recommends how the data can be analyzed and disseminated for maximum effectiveness and impact.

According to the author, “A metric can come from a single data source or it can be a combination of data from multiple data sources. Any data point that you track eventually becomes a metric that you can use to measure your team’s performance.” These multiple sources include project-tracking systems, source control, deployment servers and other production systems. In addition, Agile Metrics can be used to measure the technical quality of your software and the performance of the team itself (i.e., levels of communication, productivity, morale, etc.). However, the author cautions that introducing this type of analysis into a company unfamiliar with its tenets may very well encounter difficulties unless the management and personnel are fully informed of what these processes involve.

Overall I found this book to be enlightening and challenging. As a newbie to the field of agile development, I was intrigued by the software tools it recommends, that are applicable to many development situations. I plan to pass this book on to my IT team for additional comment and review.

Works well, includes all components

Works as expected!

I purchased a new item from a third party seller, and as indicated, the kit contains a circuit board and other necessary components. The only thing you need to add is a 9V battery (a soldering iron, pliers, wire stripper, wire cutters, and a screwdriver are necessary to assemble the kit, and some glue or hot melt glue is helpful to hold the microphone down).

The kit is pretty easy to assemble if you are comfortable soldering stuff, and the instruction manual is in both English and German. The manual includes a few experiments/suggestions for different ultrasound sources to listen to.

The circuit appears to use a heterodyne detection system, so you will need to optimize the local oscillator frequency (with the frequency knob) to listen to different sources.

Great book, covers all the basics about how to ...

Great book, covers all the basics about how to get an Android development environment up and running with OpenCV for Android on either Mac or Windows, with several example apps covering some basic use cases of OpenCV in an app setting. Highly recommended for beginners in this area, you can get an app up and running in less than a hour.

A worthwhile read!

I've worked with OpenCV for a few years now, mostly on personal projects with a few professional applications scattered here and there, and I can safely say that Android Application Programming with OpenCV 3 will give you a clear, solid foundation on the topics covered. Discussed in the book are various things that you need to know to start working with OpenCV, specifically with the Android mobile platform, such as setting up the Eclipse IDE, and getting OpenCV native runtimes installed and working (a feat that is not particularly easy with a guide). It also delves into the complicated subject of OpenCV itself, of course, which can also be daunting, but the book explains the subject in a fairly understandable way. I particularly found the Image recognition section, and as someone who has worked on an application with that feature, I know how difficult this topic can be, especially when discussing the finer points of OpenCV's convoluted datatypes, but the author does this well, and I feel like I definitely learned quite I bit!

Overall, I can say that I really enjoyed the book.

Content is already outdated the day the book was published.

Google has decided to discontinue Eclipse before this book got published and yet knowing this fact the author still decides to use Eclipse as the development environment because "for our purposes, Eclipse is a bit more convenient than Android Studio". As a result of this poor decision the book is already outdated the day it was published at the end of June 2015. Google has discontinued Eclipse and I only have Android Studio in my computer. I was wondering what the author would say about that.

Where was this book when I was in school!

I can't believe just how fast I am now reading after working through this book. I have heard people say before that it was possible, but with Nathan's help, I really have been able to get it working.

Nathan starts by explaining why it is so important to read fast. We are hit all of the time with too much information and too little time. The only solution here is to be able to consume that information faster. Though, why don't we all do it if it is so easy?

The answer as Nathan explains is because of a number of obstacles. He goes through each of these barriers including Retreating, The Voice and word Fixation and explains how to overcome them.

He points out that it isn't just speed, but comprehension. Our brains can handle the additional information and we allow our believed limitations get in the way of reaching our potential.

Finally, he goes step by step through measuring how fast you are now, the key techniques and then finishes up with some exercises and strategies.

This was a great read and now that I am speed reading, I should be able to stop wasting time and get more information faster.

Useful but not groundbreaking

This book has some useful techniques for improving your effective words-per-minute, however a lot of the suggestions are just tips for maintaining a healthy cognition. For example the book highlights the need for exercise and sleep to improve you speed reading.

Overall, it offers great summary for key speed reading principles, but repeats the same materials in many chapters. It has nothing new really. I wish it has more concrete speed reading exercises and techniques other than read more on a regular basis.

About the Author
Deborah Halber is a Boston-based journalist whose work has appeared in The Boston Globe; Technology Review; the interactive, illustrated digital magazine Symbolia; and many university publications. A native New Yorker, she received her BA from Brandeis University and an MA in journalism from New York University. A member of the American Society of Journalists and Authors, Mystery Writers of America, and the National Association of Science Writers, she has chronicled breakthroughs in neuroscience, molecular biology, energy, and technology at MIT and Tufts, but is most enthralled with “quantum weirdness,” worm longevity, cell undertakers, and the properties of snail slime. Good, but too unorganized and confusing to be great.

I am a true crime addict. I used to watch TruTV nonstop, back when it used to air a bunch of nonfiction crime shows instead of scripted reality tv, and now I watch Investigation Discovery incessantly. I was so excited about this book because it sounded so intriguing, plus I thought I could get some tips on how I could possibly become a "web sleuth" and help identify missing persons and unidentified remains.

While this book was interesting and definitely shared a lot of different true crime and missing persons stories, it wasn't as good as I was expecting it to be. It was instead a little confusing, frustrating, and hard to follow. The author not only jumps around chronologically with the cases, but she also jumps around with how she got involved in this endeavor and the various people she met and interviewed along the way. It just made for a confusing story overall. It was hard to keep track of who was who, because she jumped from person to person and case to case. It was also frustrating because I would get invested in one missing person case or web sleuth, but then she'd jump to another person or case before I got all the details I wanted from the first one. If or when the author would then jump back to a previous person or case, I couldn't remember any of the details because so much other info had been covered in the meantime, so I had to flip back through multiple pages to try to remember who or what we were talking about.

For instance, the author would start talking about a person and perhaps a case that person was involved in. While starting to talk about them, she'll mention another person and sidetrack to explain them, before backtracking to explain something else, and then sidetracking again, before eventually jumping back to the "first" story, or sometimes before jumping into something else entirely.

I guess I wanted this book to be more straightforward and linear. I was hoping to learn, perhaps, how the author became aware of this situation and started her research, and maybe that the book would follow her through her research as she interviewed various people. Or, I wish she would have focused on a couple people or cases as a time and told us about them and how they solved these cold cases. I didn't expect that the author would just jump around and first mention a particular case before jumping to this amateur detective and then starting explaining about a relative of that person before suddenly explaining about statistics of unidentified bodies and then abruptly going back to the cold case that was mention eons ago. All of this made it hard for me to really sink into the book because I couldn't keep any of the people, timeframes, or cases straight and I would start to get interested in something or someone before being jolted out of that topic and into another. I did feel the last few chapters of the book were a little easier to follow, as they seemed more focused on just one or two cases or people, and it didn't seem as all-over-the-place as the rest of the book.

Overall, this was a really interesting book with a lot of true crime tidbits. Unfortunately, I can't give it more than 3 stars because the way the book was organized was very confusing and frustrating at times. Regardless, still worth a read for anyone interested in the topic. A good book, but not great.

Awkward Read

This book is somewhat difficult to plow through as the author jumps from one item of case information to another rather following a simple narrative outline. The result is an awkward reading adventure. There is occasional bad grammar. Unforgiveable misspellings also occur. The blurbs on the back of the dust jacket overrate the book because of the dysfunctional way the book is written. Nevertheless, Ms. Halber relates a fascinating story of relentless, amateur detective work. I just wish the book had been composed in a more orderly fashion.

highly entertaining anecdotal look at how amateurs are solving cold cases

The Skeleton Crew: How Amateur Sleuths Are Solving America's Coldest Cases by Deborah Halber is a very highly recommended, fascinating anecdotal look at how amateurs are solving cold cases.

Chances are you know of a cold case, an unsolved murder right in your own city. Startlingly, according to what Halber discovered, chances are also "good that you or someone you know has at one point stumbled over a dead body. There are shockingly large numbers of them out there. According to the national institute of Justice, America is home to tens of thousands of unidentified human remains, with four thousand more turning up every year: intrepid adventurers or athletes who left their IDs at home; victims of accidents and mass disasters; suicides; undocumented immigrants; the homeless; runaway teenagers; victims of serial killers; and those who cast off a former identity, changed names, and left no forwarding address." These cases are often given "mournful monikers" from the communities in which their bodies were found and become known as the "Tent Girl, Somerton man, Princess Doe, Saltair Sally, the Boy in the Box, the Belle in the Well, the Lady Who Danced Herself to Death." I can think of several unsolved cases where I currently live and know of others from various other communities I've lived in over the years. The number of unsolved cases is shocking. It is easy to see why law enforcement officials don't prioritize these unsolved cases when there are so many other crimes that can be solved.

While amateur detectives did try to solve some of these cases over the years, often searching for a missing relative, the age of the internet has dramatically changed their success rate. Now these same amateurs have access to much more information and they often have the time and desire to solve these cold cases. It becomes a rather macabre hobby where members have created online communities based on providing information on the cold cases and virtually compete with each other to try to solve them.

"By 2001, the same unidentified corpses that were once almost universally ignored had evolved into tantalizing clues in a massive, global version of Concentration played around the clock by a hodgepodge of self-styled amateur sleuths, a dedicated skeleton crew that shared a desire to match faces to names—and names to dead bodies. Anybody with an idealistic bent, a lot of time, and a strong stomach could sign on: a stay-at-home mom in New York, a chain store cashier in Mississippi, a nurse in Nebraska, a retired cop and his exotic-dancer girlfriend in Houston." Halber actually looks at some of these cold cases and the legends that have sprung up around them. Intertwined in the stories about the cold cases is information about the amateurs who are spending vast amounts of personal time trying to solve them. As these online communities share tips and information on discussion boards like Cold Cases and the Doe Network, they can also get overly competitive and combative with each other. Even so, many law enforcement officials are benefiting from their skills at solving these very cold cases.

Halber writes in a very conversational, anecdotal, personal style that, after glancing at other reviews, I'm guessing you either like or don't like. I happened to enjoy The Skeleton Crew a lot and part of that enjoyment was in Halber's treatment of the topic. I found The Skeleton Crew highly entertaining. She's a great writer and, much like the cold cases she's discussing and her amateurs are trying to solve, sometimes the trail to the solution takes a few meanders before you find the identity of the deceased.

The best books on Kanban come from North European authors

The best books on Kanban come from North European authors. This little book, well illustrated and witty, brings its share of novelty and the appendix contains a few treasures of its own as to how to foster the creative cycle and bring concept ideas to the table. It is a practical book from shared experiences. A book you would find on a table in a development project and not stacked in your book shelf once you are done with it. I have seen a lot of Kanban boards and there is a gem in this book that ranks on my top 3 list of innovative Kanban boards.

Will Recommend to Clients

I'm an Accredited Kanban Trainer (AKT) and Kanban Coaching Professional (KCP) and I will be recommending this book to my clients. Mattias Skarin's case studies complement nicely the more foundational Kanban books by David J Anderson and Mike Burrows.

There are two of the Kanban concepts that real-world user continue to need guidance on. (As a trainer and coach, I meet many such customers and help them apply these concepts and unlearn any related misconceptions.) The concepts are: (1) organizational, customer-focused approach that Kanban is - it is not a team-centric methodology and (2) service orientation - you apply Kanban to connecting services within your organization, not to teams. I'm happy that these two concepts are well preserved and illustrated in this book.

Useful real-world Kanban case studies

I rate this book 5/5 stars, because it‘s a very practical book, which contains nothing else but real-life Kanban case studies. With more and more books on Kanban being available, I thing this is exactly what was missing in the Kanban world. The stories show how Kanban can look like in real companies and how it helps solve real problems.
Before the case stories are presented, the book starts with Lean and Kanban in a nutshell. For me this was a nice refresher, but if you already are an expert in the theory behind Kanban, you might want to skip this part.
The case studies stem from different contexts: Product (portfolio) management, change management, project management and back office. Different people will find different stories interesting, of course.
Part II of the book contains a useful appendix where “concepts” is explained. It‘s - again very hands-on and battle tested - a framework for fostering communication between stakeholders and making product development more effective.
The only negative thing I can say about this book is that the layout and the illustrations could have been a little bit nicer.
I recommend this book to everyone who wants to read about how Kanban can look like when it‘s applied in (messy) reality.
